She ran in our conference and was multiple-time D2 all-American in xc and track. She hasn't run any 800's in awhile and if so it was for training even in college therefore her PR isn't on par with her other times. She explained that they only allowed universality athletes in the 100m, 800m and marathon and she was the top ranking athlete from their country overall (she did run World XC and beat some solid runners) so she was selected to represent them. The 800m was the only event close to her normal race distances, there wasn't an option.
For the men's marathon you missed Yaseen Abdalla representing Sudan. He also got in off universality places even though he's never run a marathon before. Based on his track times (he ran in college at Texas and Tennessee) he can probably break 2:15, but since he technically doesn't even have a PR yet I think he belongs on this list

Oh, get a hold of yourself. I thought it was interesting. In other news, Cook Islands have a 1:47 800m runner. That's pretty cool. I think it would be awesome if one of them pops a humungous PR like 1:47-1:43 or something.
Helalia Johannes is a pretty strong athlete for a Universality placement. She ran 2:19:52 to get 3rd in Valencia in 2020 which makes her the oldest sub-2:20 marathoner at age 40, got a gold medal in Doha 2019, plus a Commonwealth Games gold in 2018 in the Gold Coast. So she's probably got a chance if it ends up being really hot.
These are still very fast times. It's not like that 800 girl from US who represented Saudi. That was just pathetic.
I thought this would be a list of every American distance runner.

I think it's actually quite callous for the IOC to include this woman in the Olympic marathon.
You're basically condemning her to 3+ hours of the worst pain and misery one can experience in running.
She'll inevitably get caught up in the hype of the race; go out with the pack at 2:25 pace for the first km or two, and then have to death march the last 35k plus.
If you're running over an hour slower than the other competitors, then their marathon pace is likely faster than your 3k pace.
It's just cruel.
In my opinion this is in poor taste. All of the athletes at the games had to overcome obstacles to get there. We should respect them, not make fun of them.

I really don't detect any derision, I think it's just another way to catalog the runners going into the world's most famous track meet. I'll definitely be checking the heat results to see how they did. when I encounter a complete unknown, I'm usually comparing their PB to their performance anyway, so this will just give me people to look for. It's a way to make the heats a bit more interesting. It would be really cool to see one make the semi in the 800. Extremely unlikely, but still something to look for as you pursue the results.
Ryan Clarke ran 1:44.83 on may 30 according to world athletics.

Error hasn't been corrected in the women's 800m or women's 5k, FYI (7/30, 9:11am). unless you changed the link for the article with the changes (I'm following the link that started this thread)
I think you guys are missing the Somalia runner that's in the 800m I think he's 1:46.x.
