As someone that battles depression, anxiety, and PTSD suicide is an incredibly selfish and preventable cause of death. The sufferer may want the pain to end but it never ends for the survivors. A few months ago I was hospitalized with celiac and IBS when I was released from the hospital the bowel pain was unbearable I could not even travel in a car without having panic. The thoughts of wanting it to end were ever present but my wife sought help for me and the correct anti-depressant medications have made living comfortable again. People should know they are not alone when the mental pain is present but it is important to seek help.
If you think suicide is selfish, then maybe the world should stop beating people down in general to the point that they have to look within themselves to feel refuge. You're clueless as it gets.
I don't think you've truly been in a situation where you really wanted to end it or you'd understand that it's anything far from selfish. Some people who've been there actually feel that the world and everyone around them would be happier if they were not a burden on them. You have it completely twisted. Some are actually thinking about others and calculate (often tragically miscalculate) that their death won't make them less of a burden but it can be hard to convince someone of that when they've been told all their life that they were useless or a burden or told that they got on their nerves from multiple people around them.
Some people are naturally shy and introverted and as a result it may be hard for them to know that not everyone is the same as those who have hurt or judged them in the past. So they see everyone they encounter as a problem or think that random people are judging them the way their parents or older relatives judged them.
When did I diagnose somebody? did I say I was a clinical psychologist? People love to assume they know all about depression and suicide. When people actually commit the act they say things like "They were selfish" or "Only thinking about themselves". Buddy, you have NO IDEA what people feel and go through.

May he rest in peace. I feel for him and his family. People considering suicide are not in a clear mental state. You might as well call people with cancer selfish for dying on their loved ones. Please have some compassion.

You have no right to say this. None. And furthermore, it is untrue.
Honestly, I am glad that I am no longer a competitive runner. I have no idea what drove this young man over the edge if suicide was indeed the cause, but I can imagine being a sub-elite distance runner in crisis mode. Allow me to project…
Just watching the Olympic Trials and recent DL performances (both men and women, but especially the women), it’s clear there is almost zero chance to be competitive at the elite level without the use of performance enhancing drugs.
I’d imagine it would be a very difficult transition for someone like Daniel, formerly a national-level high school and college runner trying to reach the professional level, having to watch others surpass you with ease as they cheat their way to medals, endorsements, and fame.
My name is Christina De La Torre, I’m Daniels oldest sister. I’m not a runner but felt a strong need to join this platform because of one post. My brother was far from selfish, he worked at a school for kids with special needs. Kids would often tell him “I’ve never had a teacher that cared as much as you.” Some of the families at the school couldn’t afford to buy groceries, so my brother would deliver them food or even give families money. On his most recent hike in Colorado he met an older couple, the husband suffers from Parkinson’s so Daniel accompanied them throughout the hike. He has 6 nephews and nieces that he showered with love! He was a wonderful brother, uncle, teammate, cousin, friend and son. On top of all his running achievements he had two master’s degrees! My family is inundated with messages from people he inspired. I can’t keep up with all the memorials already scheduled by his running clubs, friends, students and co-workers. The word selfish has not been used once in our household! He suffered from mental illness, he fought hard and for many years. Selfish has not crossed my mind once, the word you should be using is selfless! You clearly know nothing about mental illness so I recommend you educate yourself on the subject. No need to respond to my post, you didn’t know my brother so your words are meaningless!
