After seeing the Chinese womens shot putters at Worlds, the kids sitting next to me were VERY "concerned". I said, Dont worry, we have a Hulk! They were astounded by how USA responded to the Chinese challengers with a victory on her first attempt. She even wore makeup!
I live in china (as an American expat) and try to follow the sport here and you can't believe the obsession the chinese public has with Wu Yanni. Numerous articles on MSN China front page and local news media, many videos of her on Douyin (china tiktok). she gets so much media attention you would think she is the only person representing Chinese track and field. She's pretty controversial (for local tastes) with her appearance. she's got tattoos (which she sometimes has to cover up), she wears makeup and jewelry accessories, she's already gotten quite a few endorsement deals for local products. She's got a feisty and outspoken personality that shows up in her interviews, much like Parker Valby. I would say she's very popular though some people do complain or mock her (much like the Letsrun message board to be honest). Even though she'll likely be hard pressed to make the finals (and maybe not even the semis), she's now carrying the very high expectations of a nation of 1.5 billion nationalistic people.
It's impossible to have honest coverage behind the Great Firewall of China. The DL can't bring any staff from Europe. The officials, stats, timing, TV, writers, etc in China are all Communist Party members or long time foreign sympathizers, international propagandists, Red pinko traitors.
