Did they not have that turn marked with an arrow before the men came through? it seems odd that all of the women missed the arrow without someone noticing and yelling out. No one from the race officials mentioned anything at the awards when it was already obvious something happened.

I am a a woman who ran the race. All of the women ahead of me appeared to continue straight up a dirt/rocky path climb. The woman behind me called out, "the course is this way!" and after some initial confusion I turned around and followed her. The rest of the women after us seemingly went the right way. There were red flags marking the course, but the turn was counterintuitive bc you needed to veer off a climbing path and head DOWN a grass hill, for the first big downhill of the race. So yeah it was marked but not clearly as it could have been.

The race directors straight up ignored that it happened, and while I think it was the right move to give the top 10 the awards bc it was only mid/back of pack women who ran the correct course, I still think it should have been acknowledged what occurred.

There was no arrow, which I thought was crazy because other, more obvious turns had signs posted with arrows. There was no marking, whatsoever, other than the little flags that mark the course.
If this was a flat section, it might not have been a big issue to follow the flags, but on a steep climb, you’re mostly just staring at your feet and taking glances up at the top.
This turn was like 80% of the way up to the top of that hill. It was very easy to miss. I missed it myself during the men’s race, but then saw the little flags veer off in my peripheral vision, which brought me to a complete stop. I looked around, and then some of the women behind me (whom I had been catching from the earlier race) screamed “left!” Then I knew to go back down to the left. I thought it was bizzare that they didn’t put an arrow there.

If it was actually marked as everyone is saying, albeit badly, and everyone else figured it out then I don’t know how they let the results stand. They should take who they want to Italy, but just for credibility of their organization they should remove those who cut the course from the official results. Otherwise why even have a course, just let people race to the top however they want instead. Just because it probably didn’t affect the outcome doesn’t mean you can pretend it didn’t happen.

It will end up going down as the year the women ran very very fast.

Not all of the women went the wrong way. I was just after that top 40 group, and ran the full course. That being said, I can see how the women who didnt' know the course from previous years (i.e. leaders) could have missed that turn. The top women would have been the top women regardless of course, IMHO, so I think it all shook out the way it would have anyways. The RD's do an amazing job with this race, and there's a plethora of logistics that go on behind the scenes to pull this race off, so hopefully most of the other women in the race feel the same way and will just come back hungry for a better place finish next year.

good, classy post. It's easy to criticize but this was a good-faith effort and result on the part of the RD as well as the top competitors. This is a great event and the snafu this year doesn't change that. I hope we see a lot more of promising young American athletes taking this on.
