oooooh, Nia did not get the same attention, because the one and only USA medallist for the 800 for Paris got lost in a horror scene and the USA is now robbed of a chance for another medal
yes, soooo weird that the attention did not go to Nia
On the websites I frequent (4chan, KiwiFarms, patriots.win) people are having the same reaction as they are here at letsrun.
No one "hates" Mu. But when you never race, talk s--- about the sport, and refuse to work on your horrible tactics -- yeah, it's hard to feel a tremendous amount of sympathy.
Again, Sage is the one I feel bad for. Personality matters in this game.
I'll never understand LRC & just the blanket hate it gives to certain athletes. I think it starts with the brojos & the moderators. They get to frame issues/discussions. If they took a measured stance then people would adjust to that.
Our best 800 runner, working their way back to the top of the sport, went down & won't get a chance to defend her gold medal. How is the reaction glee from a lot of people on here? It's weird to root against your own athletes. I get that Mu disappeared for a bit & has dared to act/say that there's more to life than running. I'm guessing she has good reasons for the above -- reasons she hasn't shared personally with all of the people hating on her on here. My guess is it's tied to mental health/pressure. It's tough being a top athlete. She doesn't owe us anything to talk through it. That doesn't mean you should have some sharp negative opinion of her. Watching the race the reaction should be that's too bad/I would've liked to have seen her get back to top form/but the new team is good & deserving. Figure out who is at fault, fine, but the excitement if you come to the conclusion that it's her is bizarre.
Can you help me understand how the moderators and brojos are inciting "blanket hate" against Mu? Isn't Rojo advocating for the 800 to be re-run?
Or did you just post an uninformed and nasty take?
This board is full of racists, is why. People like the Norwegian or Femke can never do any wrong. But Athing or Sydney - that's a different story.
I love calling them out for that.
Example now. It's clear she was never lying and did mess up her hamstring. But there's just still people saying she should have raced more. Makes absolutely no sense.
Another one. Quigley praised for being a model. Mu made fun of for it. Only on LRC
She's never actually 'flopped' though. I'm not sure 3 world finals and coming second to Mu twice and Moraa once counts as flopping - she didn't go into any of them as the favourite.
In what way is she “my” athlete? Just because she’s american? So is every other athlete in the race, I cant root for everyone
sports fandom is entirely about cheering for arbitrary athletes against others. This is no different than tons of basketball fans saying “i knew that guy was a choker” and feeling validated when player X they dont like underperforms in the playoffs.
That so many people seem to be taking joy in Mu's misfortune is really disheartening. I agree that her recent lack of racing likely played a role in what happened, but at the end of the day it was still a terrible accident that absolutely crushed her and brought her to tears. Gleefully saying "I told you so" and kicking her when she's down is low, even for Letsrun.
People want their athletes to be very public and open. They also want them to actually participate. Mu barely ever runs. It's the equivalent of an NFL quarterback who signs a huge deal but decides he's only going to play two instead of 16 games each year.
They also wants a lot of social media posts and being very transparent about things like injuries. If Peyton Manning wasn't starting a game it wasn't a big mystery why, we all knew whatever injury he had that was keeping him out.
I really think everyone around here feels bad for Mu.
I don’t. She got exactly what she deserved, she was totally responsible for her fate.
And I even LIKE her! I get the whole modeling thing, and I like that she has other interests and isn’t just a one-liner.
But I don’t feel bad for her, in any measure. If anything, this is a welcome comeuppance.
She’s an adult. She will gather herself, figure out what to do, and move forward—and I will be genuinely interested in what she will do after the dust settles. I hope she will increase her commitment to track.👍

It's encouraging that since I've posted a lot of people have chimed in saying they feel bad for Mu, while explaining that they think she was at fault & tie that to her lack of racing. That's totally fine. But that's not what has been posted on these threads. Read back through. Look at the up/down votes. There is a lot of glee/excitement over what happened. That's the part I find bizarre. &, yes, I think the people who run the site create an environment where that kind of stuff is normalized for certain athletes. Yes, a thread was started about possibly re-running the event. That just feels like some clickbait to me to get people talking. What you never see is a founder quoting something said that's awful & saying that that's not welcome on here. That's what I would like to see more of. They hide behind speech. It's fine to say whatever you want. But it's also fine to call stuff out if you were interested in cleaning stuff up on here. The discourse on Mu is not simply about who was at fault or if you feel bad for her or if she should have raced more. People are saying much more than that. Again, it's weird.
Disagree, you take a risk when you run in the pack rather than staying out of trouble like Nuguse made sure to do in the 1500. If you're a medal contender, you're leaving things to chance by running in a bunch.
Did you cheer for Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers? How about LeBron? Do you cheer for Alabama and Ohio State and Georgia and Clemson? If we don't have favorites, sport is dead.
You are correct. I think 2 out of 3qualifiers are black and everyone is happy for them. 20% of our population is black so by proportion, there may have been no black qualifiers. Yet some posters see racism when people don't cry for Mu. She is just another runner to most fans. People don't love or hate her. But many don't like the coverage by NBC taking away from the qualifiers. And many don't like Rojo calling for special treatment. It is why some people don't like the Caitlyn Clark treatment. She white by the way while Mu is black.
In the aftermath of that race, one of the craziest things is the polar opposite reaction from these boards vs the comments on Instagram posts about the race and YouTube comments. Every comment on social is about the heartbreak for Athing and talking about how unfair it is but LetsRun brought out the confetti and fireworks. I honestly feel bad for Nia Akins because she killed her race and it felt like her whole celebration got crosscut with Athing in tears heading down the tunnel.
Credit to Mu for moving off the track quickly and allowing Nia and the others to celebrate their deserved Olympic spots.
