It is going to be a fascinating 800m to decide the Olympians, but it’s not Chari vs. Hall. Hall is in easy, while Chari loses a lot of points in the 800m, which should allow Brooks (who has been consistent at 2:15-2:17 this year) to move up to 2nd. The real battle will be for third place between Chari (whose 800m is 2:17-2:32) and fourth-placer Michelle Atherley (whose 800m is 2:06-2:12).
Chari is 183 points ahead of Atherley. That is 12-13 seconds in the 800m. If Atherley runs a 2:07.00, Chari would need a 2:19.05. If Atherley runs a 2:12.00, Chari would need a 2:25.34. It could be very close.
Thank you for being the hero we needed explaining this in advance of the race.
ridiculous coverage by nbc (and ridiculous complicity by Hall) implying she was some sort of surprise. She was milking that. She literally could have stopped at the finish line and let almost everyone pass her, and still won the Heptathlon.
Hall looked pretty happy after that 800. good for her. Sounded like she experienced a lot of emotions over the past 6 or 7 months. to win the trials must have felt pretty darn good.
