Are you really implying that Kessler’s suboptimal positioning during races is because he *might* be autistic? That seems to be a huge logical leap - more likely it’s just due to the comparatively few races he’s run vs anyone else who went through full HS and collegiate careers
I also think any of this is in extremely bad taste. What's Sahlman's excuse for running over 45 seconds coming in? Ohhhh Yes! It's the coaching. Some of you are a joke on here.
I also think in this particular race, Kessler broke off the line slower than desired , but was still okay and right about past the 400M mark, with solid position clearly on the outside of Engels...and not impeding him, gets slightly rubbed. then an outright arm push from Engels. That's the way I saw it, I also think bumped from behind? It's not on him to run faster there, the guy behind? Pass in middle of lane two.
Why is there always drama with Kessler and big meets? Is he our generation's Steve Holman?
I think Engels was the aggressor in this instance. Looked like Sahlman cut in tight on Kessler and Hobbs gave him a nudge. Engels in reaction to Hobbs getting held up by Sahlman gave him a tap and then a moment later big shove later which might’ve just been frustration.
I don't think this should be that controversial. Maybe the first shove was fine but there's no place for the 2nd. Engels shouldn't have done that. Not saying it's DQ worthy but what is he doing there
Marty Liquori's coach Fred Dwyer punched a dude at Milrose games
Indeed, the great Wes Santee, I think of Kansas? Quite a scene.
Read that Bowerman would occasionally instruct a runner to nudge/bump a fellow competitor when the latter was in mid-stride (both feet off the ground) in order to disrupt their rhythm.
At around the 400m mark of the 2nd heat of the 1500m semifinal, Craig Engels gives an arm-fully-extended shove to Hobbs Kessler, clearly breaking up Kessler's stride. I know Kessler seems to occasionally have difficulties finding his space while running in a crowd, but it didn't seem like he was cutting in or encroaching.

I agree on this. But I don’t think this was one that should added to the Hobbs hijinx of traffic management montage!! Lol

Just like what happened with veteran Hocker at Pre, I believe Engals was hazing the kid a bit. ...Not condoning it but it will actually help Kessler in the long run.
Or its the Olympic trials and the exhilaration makes it harder to think. Same with Prefontaine. He is 21 so it is the least surprising thing ever his tactics aren't the best.

I could be misremembering but I thought after he first broke 4 he said he was autistic. Like he was plenty open about it.
I don’t think that’s why he has tactical issues though. It’s probably due to a lack of racing, but I don’t think the NCAA would’ve particularly helped him any more than being a pro.
