Hocker looked great. Best of the qualifiers. Made 3:34.5 look fairly easy.
I'd agree that he is in sub 3:30 shape. Impressive run.
Like Scotty said..and Rojo I am a little surprised at you, I thought he ran a great race and smart, get yourself out of trouble, shut down the last 25 meters. I don't know about sub 3:30 , but that looked pretty comfortable. He certainly looks improved to me.

Yes, Kinger. I'm not saying he goes under 3:30 here, but as you said, he seems to have improved and he's a 3:30.77 guy to begin with.
I'd be very surprised if the team was not Hocker, Nuguse, Kessler. 3 best.

I’d be pretty surprised if Kessler made the team, he was recently beaten by Holt and looked pretty tired after the first round.

Can someone explain that to me? Does he not know its 3 rounds? Super impressive regardless.
I’m confused by what you and your team want to see from athletes running in the qualifying rounds. Here you criticize Hocker for running faster than he needed to. Yet this is what’s written about Valby in the recap of the women’s 5,000 heat:
“She had broken the pack down to four by the bell but it was the seasoned veterans who had made the team before who showed her a thing or two about championship racing on the final lap. St. Pierre ripped a 31.69 final 200 to come home with the win.”
So which is it: Should athletes be holding back or closing fast in the qualifying rounds?

Yeah the only critique would be he could’ve seen the screen at 150 to go and cruised a tad bit more in the homestretch. This is an easier effort than will be required for the Olympics heat. Will be interesting to see if Teare and him do team tactics today. They could trade off 57-58s and both qualify pretty easily/stress-free IMO. Prakel, Holt and the Washington boys would be deferential until the last 300 I believe.

My general theory is that the guys in supreme shape (Nuguse, teare, Hocker, Kessler) can run hard heats and take significantly less damage than everyone else in their heats. By making everyone else work for it (Hocker's heat need 3:36 for an Auto Q), they are putting far more damage into their opponents. Look at Eric holt yesterday, he looked pretty close to maxed out. He's going to feel that today, and likely have a hard semi, and really feel it by the final. Hard heats ensure that the pretenders are cooked by the finals and there are nor big upsets. Of course if hocker isn't in the shape he thinks he is in, this will backfire spectacularly, but he broke 13 this year, I think he's really aerobically fit for a 1500 guy with a massive kick.

Thats my fitrst thought, too. But then Im like "what if he was actually running with future rounds in mind(and I have no reason not to think hes by now a seasoned competitor and smart guy)? Im going with hes track savvy and is just gonna keep on competing according to his feeling and track savvy.
Plus, surely he knows I declared him one of my picks to make the team!

He looked pretty tired? I thought he looked great ..and from what I heard he came out of it great ...As Scotty alluded in many posts regarding Kessler..He is clearly the third most talented guy, that s obvious from 3:32..7:39 3K 17 months ago, a Worlds solid solid performance granted not THE toughest field ever. and a new 1:45.07 which if he had not botched his positioning and finish surely was going to be in the 1:44.x range. Look, I am always looking for the good here, I know that, but what I like especially, is he ran a great plan
Got out well, out of traffic, was never in trouble, let Nuguse ease by him, he could have fought too hard to stay in front, closed around into great position off the turn, and then this....when the field was flying coming home, you can see the second down shift of acceleration last 50-60, you can visibly see it. The tools and fitness and abilities are all there..tactics only will dictate his finish. I believe you saw Holt's two best races two plus weeks ago. Just an opinion.A lot is expected of young Kessler, who is way way better than Nuguse in every event at this age of 21 and 3 months? Hocker? Hocker is really good, and I thought his who being last night looked better than ever, his stride, his arms, his cadence, everything.

All accurate. Sahlman is the other guy in the same zip code talent wise (though not there). He’s probably a year or two behind and will look to get stronger (physically and aerobically). I’ve liked how Kessler has looked and think this more stacked field benefits him over Holt/Teare who I can see having more trouble with navigating packs.

Great point on Teare, as soon as his heat was over , a pretty knowledgeable fan texted me and said kind of , why does Teare who does have incredible tools put himself into trouble when he shouldn't have to? I am very good friends with Scotty, who I know thinks Teare is better suited to 5K, but, in our country right now, his Twice run 3:32.x's are quite a bit better than the next tier of guys, he will factor in my opinion. 5K team is tough to make right now..Fisher is a lock , the draft and kick, cannot stand him, LOL Woody Kincaid, and Nico even Parker Wolfe might be dangerous, it's hard to make teams now. But Teare clearly is talented enough to make 5K .

....
I agree. Hocker wasn't worrying about his competition as he was sending A LITTLE message overseas, I'm coming. I think he will be a little more conservative in the semi and go for it in the final. When you know you in the form of your life and internationally no one's talking about you, send a message that your coming...

I agree. Teare just consistently plays with fire. He’s constantly up front, then getting himself into a box, then having to find space and get by people. In the 5,000 I like his chances too. Woody has no Q mark so maybe he bails on it. Wolfe and Nur certainly big threats and Nurs whole season has been weird. Olin Hacker is kinda the poor man’s Joe Waskom type too if you fall asleep a bit. McGorty is a complete unknown. But I think Cooper can make it straightforward and just track Grant the whole way and I’m not sure who’s outkicking him.
