Olympic village will no AC in Paris

Wrong. Native Americans didn't build it. They were killed or forced into reservations. The Europeans built the major metropolitan areas, industry, factories and infrastructure in the 1800-1900's to make America what it is today in terms of business and economy.

The big dollar contract and professional athletes are in five star hotels and rented homes with all of the amenities.

The "just happy to be here!" athletes and poor amateurs are in the village.

The opportunities for adult fun with two tiny Korean gymnasts, a Lithuanian basketball player, and a local mime - priceless!

My European girlfriend always complains about how badly she sleeps when she’s back home in the summer. Just like Americans, Europeans don’t like hot houses. But it’s the way things are there, so they try to cope.

The irony is that all of their alternatives still accept the premise that it’s uncomfortable without AC on a warm day. They just use different workarounds because that is their culture.

I personally prefer to set a number in my thermostat and always be the perfect temperature. I work outside every day in the summer, so I would rather not deal with being uncomfortable during my personal time. And if I were competing in the biggest competition of my life, I would also prefer to be comfortable.

Posh and American don't really go together.

The modern USA is more on a par with India and Mexico, and possibly even China than western Europe. Particularly when it involves wasting energy and belching out pollution when you could simply just open a window.

Trying to point out to average Americans that much of their country is on the same latitude as North Africa is a step too far. They just can't take it in. Explaining to them that northern France has been quite cool this summer and nights can be cold is something they will never compute.

Interestingly, 2/3 of the Olympic village is un-air conditioned, the residential part. Amazingly, the offices Do have A/C.

Also, athletes from wealthy countries like the US are bringing portable ACs.

Athletes from poorer countries will not have portable ACs due to lack of funds and organization. So US athletes may have an advantage.

I live in the Pacific Northwest, and until the last decade or so, it really wasn't standard to have A/C here. (It wasn't until 2023 that more than 50% of Seattlites, for example, had A/C: https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/data/seattle-is-no-longer-the-least-air-conditioned-major-metro-area/)

Despite having grown up in Virginia with A/C, after moving to Seattle, I would just suffer through the heat. We did all the usual things - curtains closed all day, doors open, fans running, etc. It was still miserable at times. However, it was tolerable until I became pregnant. My first pregnancy was absolutely miserable. I was throwing up every day and so hot. It was terrible. But you become indoctrinated by the no A/C thing, and people don't even really think of installing central A/C. I had lots of friends at work who would talk all the time about their misery in the summer when heat waves hit but wouldn't consider installing central A/C, despite being able to afford it.

Finally, my husband and I wised up and spent 10K installing central A/C. Now we are comfortable and cool in the summer. We actually don't even run it all that often, but it's wonderful when we need it.

And Americans rebuilt Europe after the soft Europeans let Hitler run roughshod over them in WWII.

When I was in London for the Olympics, the Brazilian fans were astonished at the lack of AC.

Cooler temperatures are helpful for sleep quality, and every time there's a heat wave, old people without AC die. It's one of the most practical modern inventions.

Further proof Russia has the EU by the short hairs. Can they at least get fans?

second this post. i stayed in paris for a month in july once, though it was a couple decades ago. lows -- high 50s low 60s, could even wear a sweater some mornings. highs -- around 80. but sometimes heat waves. so we're talking NW US, maine, upper midwest, that kind of summer.

sun stays up like 5am - 11pm.

Being that we are on the same latitude as North Africa and all that and the fact that the British foreign service considers our capital to be a "tropical posting," yea, we all have air conditioning and freaking love it. You want to sweat your balls off at night on a 95 degree day with 90% humidity and the temperature only dropping to 82 with darn near 100% humidity at night? Go right ahead! I prefer sleep.

So Olympic village will know AC in Paris?

Pretty easy to get the European women's sprint teams to come hang out in your room when you have the only rooms with A/C.

Did you read the Canadian article? It mentions several countries that are upset. America has it's problems, but people love to hate America for the sake of hating.
