Colin Sahlman did great for a sophomore, leading the whole thing and threatening to win but not being able to keep the lead down the stretch. He might be favored more with a quicker pace. Waskom knows to time his kick, sometimes a bit too late but right on the money here. No one coaches the 1500m like Andy Powell right now. It's notable that the field included a 3:30 guy in Spencer, 3:33 guys in Sahlman (high 3:33) and Essayi, and at least one 3:34 guy in Wascom, and they kicked in 52.6 in a 3:39 race on a fast surface. Compare to Ryun's 49.6-50 (36 last 300m) in a 3:38 1500m on dirt in 1967!
Your times are a little non-specific. Spencer (3:31.81), Essayi (3:32.87), Sahlman (3:33.96), Waskom (3:34.64). Spencer had a somewhat disappointing race to be kicking for 3rd not the win. Granted. He’s trying to win Indoors, Aussie Champs, Outdoors and be running 3:31s to lock in his slot soon…tough!
Ryun had a legendary kick, and I wouldn’t say any of these guys have a notably strong one (for 3:32-4 guys) yet. Waskom’s is definitely good for college, but it’s not Manzano/Centro/Hocker level where you’re thinking dark horse in a slow race vs anyone.
