Colin Sahlman fails to finish top 3 in NCAA

There was a 0.44 seconds spread between 1st and 4th. There are at least a dozen small things that could have totally shuffled that result.

Smith is the best at getting athletes very fit. His weakness appears to be an inability to teach them how to read a race and to be killers when it counts.

These jogs and blast the last 400 are cr@pshoots about who has a 52 in their legs and get a path to follow. What will happen if they run a faster pace and kick is often different.

Sahlman and Young should've ran from the front and pushed the pace. That would've burned off the sprinters. Their strength is superior conditioning, not superior speed, so they should've leveraged that advantage.

He looks a good bit more muscular than he used to. If he's not done growing yet though, he's gonna be scary in a couple years. It's not like he doesn't have great strength and speed, having run 1:45/3:33/13:3x this year (age 20!). I agree that he needs more experience, but really yesterday he just ran out of gas a little bit early and tied up hard the last 10m. He doesn't look like he'll be competitive for a spot at the Olympics this year, but competing will be great experience for him.

You think so? He's coaching Hiltz, who's won the last US 1500m title (indoors and out), and was 2nd at world indoors. He's coaching Grijalva, who's been 4th and 3rd at the last 2 Worlds. He's coaching Nur, reigning US 5k champ. He's coaching Nico, who won the 3k/5k indoors and is a favorite for the 10k team (I think they wanted to test Nico's kick yesterday, surely they knew Nico would win again if he started dropping 60s from 4 laps out).

I will say though, it's a bit strange to me that they always seem to perform so well in XC, but during track, a lot of guys seem to underperform a bit. The top guys generally always do well, but I thought Quax and las Heras were going to be way better after they ran 13:16 and sub-7:40 than they ended up being by the end of the season.

Didn’t even make it to the US final. This is why people should stop overhyping kids.

You need to remember that first and foremost, Colin runs for the college and what its needs and wants are especially since they are giving him a free education. Anything after that is gravy. It’s always easy to critique these kids/ young adults after the race has been completed. You nor anyone else will ever know how those competing are feeling before during and after their races. Just sit down and if you truly are a fan of the sport, enjoy the competition
