More like when they couldn't reach Moscow in late 1941. The Wermacht general staff knew that when they invaded in 1941 that they had to win the war on Eastern Front within 6 months. They got within 20 miles of the city and were counterattacked by 1 million Siberian troops.
It was at this point that most of Hitler's top generals knew the war was lost.
Then why didn't one of those top generals just kill Hitler, end the war, and prevent millions of Germans from dying, not to mention having their whole country being bombed to smithereens? Why continue fighting a war that you knew would completely destroy your country?
I'd guess that there were a lot of German citizens that believed the war was a mistake from the beginning.
But what were they supposed to do? Carry protest banners in the streets? Yeah, that would have worked well.
It's not like Germany in the 1930's and 1940's was like it is in the US today, where you can take over buildings, close roads, and burn cars with basically zero consequences.
There was a Resistance Movement in Germany during WWII, though it was quite small and not the least bit unified. As this article linked below points out "Many of these rebels were arrested and imprisoned in concentration camps."
It is a fascinating question, really. I can hardly remember the details but I do recall sitting through a lecture/presentation on this very topic by a guest lecturer many years ago when I was in college, and the speaker was quite learned on the topic. The exact message was that some in Germany opposed the war and Nazis from the beginning and did try to speak out, but by and large, they were the artists, the intelligentsia, and the free thinkers. They were diligent but could not gain any ground with the masses, and were thwarted and silenced. Again, these were the free-thinkers and those on the fringes, and they were resolute, nonetheless.
Some individuals and groups in Germany attempted to resist Nazism, despite the risk of being caught and facing punishment. Learn more about their efforts.
The discussion needs to start from Russia, 1915 or so.
O.P., you're implying low level working class Germans were running things. European monarchs from numerous countries financed Nazis. U.S. equivalent of billionaires of the time financed Nazis.
How do you believe Germany was able to pull their economy out of the dumps? U.S. bankers. European bankers. U.S. capitalists and European capitalists. If we were to say the names, my post will be deleted or thread removed.

They did. In 1944.
Hitler died in 1945. And it wasn't one of his generals who killed him. How is it possible that you're that clueless?

They tried to. A big thick table literally saved his life.

Did the lower echelon Nazi Party members ever recognize they were on the wrong side? I am not looking for personal opinions.
They didn't; at least not through logic and persuasion. What happened was the allied powers occupied the country and got rid of Naziism by force, imprisoning millions of party members, forcing them to work in labor camps, burning literature, etc. In East Germany (occupied by the Soviet Union) they were all sent to the gulags. Millions of German civilians in nearby countries were killed or starved just for being German.
Denazification (German: Entnazifizierung) was an Allied initiative to rid German and Austrian society, culture, press, economy, judiciary, and politics of the Nazi ideology following the Second World War. It was carried out b...
I am sorry to see that and I hope you get help. Unfortunately you probably don't realize that you are demented which would be a necessary starting point for getting help.

Because the Waffen-SS (combat branch of the Nazi party) wanted to fight to the last man in loyalty to Hitler (The Waffen-SS's motto was "My Honor Is Called Loyalty").
Look up the Battle of Bulge (1944) & see the damage the Waffen-SS did to Patton's army. The 6th Panzer Division was commanded by SS General Sepp Dietrich - who never held a field command before nor was he ever a member of the German Wermacht regular army!
See what Patton had to say about him - he was more fearful of him than Rommel.
