Have you worn the nike dragonfly's? Not much of a difference at all compared to regular spikes. The road racing shoes are the ones that make a HUGE difference in finish times. I do believe these cats running 12:30s are doped to the gills though.

My Dragonflies feel like flats now yet they're MUCH more comfortable to run my mile pace - their 5000 pace - in. I can run 60.0 and feel the pop and my legs are also much more preserved.
Gebrhiwet has now run sub-12:50 over a 12 year span. It was that special 5000m in Paris in 2012, in an era with virtually no sub-12:50s except that one race, the Mo Farah era, in which he did it the first time. And the fact that he not only ran 12:40s last year and other times but smashed 12:40 off of a pace of something like 7:41, having to run a last 2k of 4:55 or under, makes this particularly remarkable. Plus, he must be significantly older because he wasn't 18 when he ran sub-12:50 in 2012, maybe 21 then, which would put him at 33 now. I don't know why Jakob didn't take this golden opportunity to get the world record.
I don't know why team ethiopia never uses this tactic at the world championships, just tell yihune that he'll get a cut and have him pace to 3-4k and hang on to kejelcha who will push from 4k to the finish and race Gebrhiwet for the win

They trust their kick. They will pace Jakob over 13:00
I haven't even listened to the Podcast but I can hear them now saying Ethiopian don't have a trial they peaked too early, etc etc - also how the hell do you pick a Ethiopian 5K or 10K team without a trials - like Gebrhiwet, Kejelcha, Barega, Aregawi - top 4 in the world right now?

don't forget Yihune, who was the pacer for this race but stayed in the race and held on for a 12:49
No way Paris will be anything close to this time. Nobody who makes final is going to risk pushing the pace with gold medal on the line. The final mile though will likely be crazy fast.
You need to take off 10 secs for super shoes if you want to compare the time to what even hagos himself did a decade ago. But the fact is hagos took down the best in the world straight up today and that's what it's all about.

There is a 10K trial. I'd say with how close everyone is running among the big 4 you mentioned, none will be allowed to double unless Gebrhiwet wins the 10K going away at the expense of another getting a spot. I think Yihune has done quite a bit with this race too, so if he you are looking to fill a spot without permitting a double I'd place him in there. Last year, Aregawi was the lone guy to double but he won the 10K trials and had the top 5K time. So maybe there's a scenario where the 10K Trials winner and 5K WL are one and the same. Or Gebrhiwet and Kejelcha go 1-2 at 10K Trials. I think these 4 are too good to get completely snubbed unlike Haile Bekele. Yihune has an outside shot if the 5K top times and 10K trials go a different way and they're scared off playing favorites with the doubles.
Dude on the last fricking lap when I saw gebrihwet ahead of the lights that were at 12:41 PACE, I knew he was going to run some monstrous time holy crap
I knew it was going to be fast because he went through in 11:40 with 400m to go and noticeably went faster. The lights are not necessary if you do some simple math in your mind. 1 minute laps make it extra simple, 60 flat is 12:30 pace, 61 flat is 12:42.5... So to run 12:42.5 you need to see the time on the clock go up by 1 second every lap, 61, 2:02, 3:03, 4:04, etc.... I think people overestimate the usefulness of the lights.
