I'm 45 with a wife and two kids, just the remaining mortgage around $100k. Student loans, cars, everything else is paid off. If there's one "sacrifice" we've made as a family is we haven't upgraded the house when our friends and work peers did. I've just never felt comfortable making that move. First, we have what we need, 4 bedrooms, great neighborhood with great schools. And we got into a sub 3% 15 year mortgage that I have no interest in giving up.
If you start doing that math, to get a 3 car garage, mud room, another bedroom and more closets (the dream house), it would cost me $1000 a month in INTEREST to buy something that has that. I just can't justify that. Fortunately I have a wife that gets that math too. But you do get to a stage in life where you sort of say, after all that school, all that work, this is what I have to show for it?
