Valor Christian has less kids than niwot — around 1200 — but has been 5A. They have about 11 boys on their track distance roster. 7 of them will be seniors next year.

They are allowed to move schools up and down in classification based on some other factors but the main one is enrollment. The cutoff for track is 1398 looks like. My guess is valor is bumped up because they are a private school and thus much more competitive for their size than other schools.
School size is the primary consideration but teams can be moved up and down due to competitiveness, hence Niwot being moved up to 5A in XC. Niwot girls just utterly destroyed the field but Niwot boys lost narrowly. I think a case could easily be made that they should be moved up in TF as well.

Valor volunteered to compete at 5A, in response for getting busted for recruiting hockey and football athletes, as well as the alleged recruiting of track athletes (not proven). Sure, Valor has fewer enrolled kids than Niwot, Coronado, or most 4A's, however these kids do not follow a normal distribution of abilities, income, parental support, etc, that other schools have to contend with. They perform at the top population of the curve.
These kids are privileged, but not wealthy. They use the athletic experience to pad their resumes to increase their chances of being admitted to a super selective university. Not for scholarship, just for admittance, they can afford the tuition, just not a major donation that would grant admittance.
Hi — anyone know who if anyone is running post season meets? I see Ritz and Allori in the 2M and Michalak in the mile at Brooks. Anyone else? Munn? Culpepper? Brunner/Middaugh? Eike? We going to see any of them at Music City, Nike, or Brooks?
