I am guessing that he and his coaches know what's best for him
What Boling and his coaches know is that while his best event is NOT the 400, the 400 is the best event for him to get a gold medal, specifically in the mixed 4x400.
Ok, coach; otherwise, how would you know what their objective is?
Understandably, he probably just wants to be named an Olympian, and if he gets it, because of the event, he would stand a good shot to medal.
The US LJ is really weak. I don’t think he ever really tried it seriously. Not sexy, not manly, doesn’t get the juices flowing like running does.
Zero realistic chance he could ever make the 100 or 200 teams. A PB is always good and encouraging, even though he was a clown after 300. He needs some dance lessons, to learn how to relax while moving.
Or just some real coaching. Good-looking 300, though. Too bad it’s not an event, I have always thought that 400 was a bs event, the shortest middle distance—either 300m sprint and 100m hang-on run, or 400m run. Both work.
Good to see him get under 45 but he's best at 200m and most competitive relative to the talent in an event at long jump, because the event has been very weak for a long time. His natural event disposition shows in his 400s-he gets out fast, ahead of the 400 guys and then falls back in the last 150-200m.
He looked real ragged the last 70m or so. If he can address that in his training maybe he can go mid 44's soon.
It's his trademark to look ragged in the closing stages of every race he runs.
PRs are always nice. But Boling will have to slice at least half a second off this new PR to even make the finals at the trials.
45.1x made Olympic Trials finals in 2021 and 44.7 made the team. Obviously running sub 45 when it counts is different than running it in a random meet in May, but if Matt runs sub 45 at trials he gives himself a good chance to make the team.

Christian Morales Williams just popped a 44.06 yesterday.
His technique is not good
You're confusing "technique that looks bad to my eye bc the arm carriage is weird, but he keeps his turnover rate the last 70m and powers home" with "technique where the guy goes into rigor mortus the last 70m and completely loses momentum".

Sorry. CMW's technique is bad. Yet it works for him.
