Or lack of intrinsic motivation. That describes LOTS of great high school runner going to many different colleges that I thought would be good, but turned out to just want to get school paid for and never really even tried in college.
This thread doesn't make much sense. There are a ton of D1 colleges that have produced poor results either in the past decade or for their entire history. Arizona is one of them (I remember them being good in the '80s). No one going there now is expecting to really improve or really want to make running their life. If they were really into running they would choose a different college because you go off recent history of the program or you are just totally self-motivated and can get it done yourself (extremely rare). The only reason this is a thread is because Lagat is the coach, but he doesn't have any positive coaching credentials anyway, so it's dumb to expect good coaching.
