yes of course not an elite runner, no coach or anything like that. but prize money from winning races is how i survive, so taking time off is not an option. even if there were no prize money, i am not the sort of person to not line up for a race I have entered. i will always go and worst case I have to DNF midrace if I feel like I am causing further injury to my body.

so how about the ibuprofen, is it a good idea as a one off, if the aim is to manage pain and get through the race? i have had other tendon problems before e.g. achilles, but that typically fades after a warmup and I don't feel it thereafter. This peroneal tendon seems to be pain that manifests after an hour of running and progressively gets worse - not something I have any experience with and not something I want to be dealing with an hour into a 10-hour run.

I came back from 3 months without running with the first version of the Nike Infinity Run Flyknit a long time ago.

Try to find a shoe with as little padding as possible on the collar and a soft heel counter. This is what I've noticed has the most chance of success but there are a few exceptions and I can't figure out why. The Saucony Endorphin lineup worked well but they kill my PF and I had major shin splints problems.

Even after 3 years it can flair up with the wrong shoes so take your time. I'm still having success with the Nike Infinity Rn4. It's my daily trainer and I do a lot of volume.

I do all my workouts and long runs in the Adidas Prime X V1 and I've never had a problem. So the instability of a shoe is not a factor in my case. I race with the Alphafly FYI.

i got through the 10-hour race, did 114km in 38C temperature, 2nd overall, happy with it. the 1st place guy had a lot more in the tank I think.

took an ibuprofen before the race and 2 during and wasn't bothered by any tendon issues. i did a 5k race the day before and felt achilles or peroneal (sometimes it's hard to tell?) flare up a bit, but that's a faster speed. just jogging along at 5 minute/km pace felt fine.

i think it might have been a shoe issue, all of my shoes i was wearing were old and needed replacing. hopefully i can go back to normal mileage this coming week in the new shoes with no issues.
