One thing I realized as I get older is the engine is there. Sure it's not as efficient and powerful but as years ago but it's there. It's the parts that is important. If you don't have broken or worn out parts, especially the wheels, you can keep running well.
I'm a one-time 1:10 half marathon PB guy who's turning 64 in July. 1:42 at age 75 has got to be an off the charts performance. I'd be ecstatic to run faster than about 1:50 these days or to still be running at all in another 11 years. Your dad is phenomenal!
Gotta hand it to my dad. He’s running some incredible times for his age. Still running in the 22s for 5km and just placed 3rd at the national half marathon champs in 1:42! Turns 75 in June. I think part of his success at this age is he didn’t get serious about his running until he was in his early 50s and now does no more than 4 training runs per week. His 1:42 is the fastest he’s run in 5 years. He has started incorporating weight training into his training over the last 6 months at my suggestion which he feels has made a big difference. He previously was barely able to do a single pull up and can now do several along with squatting some decent weight along with lunges and pushups. It’s never too late!
That's a great time, and you are correct that it's never too late. Successful performances at our age (I turn 75 this year) tend to be based on very individual personal histories of health, past injuries, and the genetic lottery. I haven't run a half marathon in about 10 years, but ran a road 5k in 22:10 last month, and a 5k time trial this morning with my running group in 21:51. I think my success at this age is due to being serious about my health, running and competing almost continuously since college. I try to run 7 days a week and hit about 50 miles/week. I agree that weight training is very important, particularly after age 60. Only running isn't enough to maintain the strength that converts to running speed. Congratulations to your dad for doing well and putting in the work to do that well when most others have long since faded into a very sedentary lifestyle at his age.

Sounds Sus. Must not be from the U.S. because USATF Half Nationals isn't until October.
Where would you think a user named GreatDane would be from??
We should sponsor him. Will he race in the LRC shirt or singlet? Impressive.
A t-shirt? Sounds like you want him to sponsor you. 🤔
If rojo wants publicity then he should use some of his earnings from letsrun to pay Bekele to pace the OP's pops to a sub 1:40 half. Don't interfere with his buildup to Paris gold though rojo. After Bekele wins gold in Paris, then arrange for Bekele to fly to wherever the OP lives and it will be a recovery run for Bekele. I don't think he will be racing again this year after Paris.
We all know Bekele is the worlds greatest runner, but there are still many non runners who don't know him. Olympic gold at 42 in the thon will make Bekele more mainstream. The publicity will make the LRC stock price literally explode

1:42 at age 75 is only 3rd? My god.

I’ll ask him. It was a pretty close finish for the top 3. He was only 10 seconds from silver and the winner was less than a minute ahead. What’s the best way to put him in touch with you?
That’s awesome! Can only hope and pray that life blesses me with that kind of longevity. In my local area, there is a 71 year old that ran a sub 1:40 HM last year, I think he was 70 at the time. Followed each other on Strava for years now. He runs lots of hills, and seldom goes past 7 miles from what I can see. I believe I heard he ran marathons in his younger years, but can still run a 21-23 minute 5k depending on the course. I am half their age, and am so inspired by their feats of endurance!!
