He also had the shît beat out of him in 2017-ish? Never seemed to be the same after that.

I'm more interested in performance. Until there is a study concluding that missing a test is performance enhancing, I don't really see the relevance of discussing whereabouts failures.
Bosse's best years seem to have been 2013-2017. Looks like he has been plagued with injuries ever since.

That's a great find - and good on L'Equipe for still running this story even at a point in time when Bosse is long gone from the sport.
This is a really interesting situation. First of all, I like that he just owns it and says he messed up and yeah - it is conceivable that he was just a goof who didn't take all the updating seriously etc but always managed to get by despite that. On the other hand out of all the guys in that era that ran under 1.43, himself and Amel Tuka just how could I put this - "hmm" guys. As in they ran that fast and your first reaction is "hmm".
And let's be honest, French MD running has had its issues in the past with guys like Florent Lacasse, Fouad Chouki all getting themselves in trouble - there is some history of a doping culture there.

I should be careful what I right here, but many years ago I was holidaying in the south of France and passing through a tiny airport that only services 5 airlines.
Low and behold, an infamous French steeplechaser was also passing through. This would have been near the start of his senior career, not yet a World or Olympic medalist, not well known, but I knew who he was.
I text my friend, a coach with the French Federation, excitedly sharing I was stalking him and a training partner in the airport.
"He should not be there" my friend messaged, "he is down as being in a training camp elsewhere" (I cannot remember where he said) He went on to say that there were rumours of certain athletes training at a mountainous region nearby, under the radar, an area the testers basically don't go to because it is remote, and that there were whisperings within the federation a lot of doping was going on. But he was registered at another training camp with the federation.
Said athlete then went on to smash his PB and win an Olympic medal. Oh, and punch a few fellow competitors, assault a mascot etc. in a 'roid rage.
I guess it's not surprising, knowing who it is, but the incident always stuck with me and the French Federation never did anything about the dodgy training camp.

Most historians understand that Russia has existed since 1547. When the Soviet Union was formed in 1922, one of its Republics was the Russian SFSR (Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic), until 1991.
If you go to sites like "alltime-athletics", they do not list the athletes as competing for the Soviet Union. Performances in the 70s and 80s of athletes like Tatyana Kazankina are from "RUS" (Russia) and the performances of Tatyana Pozdnyakova and Valeriy Borzov are from "UKR" (Ukraine).

You know that your grand thesis rests on Russian distance times supposedly not showing a marked improvement over Soviet athlete distance times. The majority of the best Soviet distance runners were not Russian.
Russia as a nation did not exist during the Soviet Union.
