bump. taking down the oldest world record in track and field deserves more attention.
discus
Thanks for the video, Bro. It’s crazy how loud the wind is in the video. There’s no doubt those throws were all wind-aided. They should have wind limits for throws to count as records like they do for sprinting.
Now 22 year old Alekna just up his own world record today, ayear later in Ramona, to 75.56. Does a anyone have a video link?

Fun fact - he's never broken 71.00 meters anywhere on earth, except this venue.
With all due respect, these WR's are basically like Flo-Jo's 100m WR except the wind is apparently no big deal at all. Insanely there are no limits for any type of throw.
There are no wind rules for discus. The vast majority of the all-time lists throws were all done in favorably windy conditions.

Yeah, aware of this. I think the question is should there be? These guys seem to now be utilizing wind to make 5 and 6% performance jumps on their lifetime best throws NOT on this piece of farmland.
And I'm sure that a lot of the alltime best throws were done in favorable wind conditions - no different from sprinting. Not sure how many of the fastest all-time 100m races were run into headwinds. I'm going to guess zero.
The question is at what point is the wind too favorable. The winds in Tulsa/Ramona, OK on Saturday were in the 25 mph range. That's 12-13 meters per second for context. Not sure how many stadiums around the world, usually in cities and not on farmland, will experience wind like that.
I wanted to see the old WR of Schult and if there were any clues to the wind on that throw. Grainy footage but right at the end of the video (about 11s) you see an official with some kind of flag in his pocket - it's definitely flapping about and shows a tail/cross wind. But I'm sorry, that doesn't look like a 25mph wind to me, not even close.
Shout out to my fellow countryman Daniel Ståhl, who at the 2023 Worlds had the last throw of the competition and needed to clear 70m to win, and he does it by breaking the championship record by throwing 71.46, ahead of both Denny and Alekna. I wonder if this is the biggest discus throw that is neither doped and thrown in an actual stadium and not in an open field.
