Once he ran a two-man, 24-hour relay and, when his partner gave up, Kimball took his partner’s turns as well, amassing a total of 69 miles (most under 5:00) in one day. As a senior, Kimball ran 52 races — dual meets, invitationals; 880, mile, two-mile and mile relay — in three months, commenting now, “It never crossed my mind that I was running too much.”
Anyone know what Kimball did in college or beyond? I don't see him in the tilastapaja database.

He went to Oregon State, ran a road relay race against Pre, rolled his ankle and did not do anything in college. May have made one senior cross country team in the late ‘80s, and that was it.

You have forgotten the 1% effect. For every year after you have done something, you are allowed to make it about 1% better when you tell the story. So for example in college we would run mile repeats at 5:00 pace, but when I tell the youngsters about it, we ran 4:40.
Same applies here.

He did manage a 3:47 1500m for San Jose State. I often saw his name in road race results, but his times were mediocre compared to the way he ran in HS.

Abby Burfoot wore glasses when he raced. So did Bob Deines. I once asked Don McGregor if he was the highest ever Olympic Marathon finishing place, 7th in 1972, of anyone who raced in glasses. He thought it was possible but wasn't sure. One of the Soh brothers raced in glasses. It's no big deal unless its raining.

Little known fact is that he ran for Walt Lange at Jesuit, CA during his early years but his family moved so he left the school. His son had incredible talent (close to Mike Stember level) but decided to not pursue running after Freshman year. He too ran for Coach Lange and helped the team to an early state title.

Your glasses comparison ends in 73/74. What happened to all the years in between then and Martin. No glasses, more contacts.
