Do you require your guests to take off their shoes?

Well, the voice of reason here. I don't insist on guests (or workers) taking off their shoes when entering my house. I'd like it if they did but I don't ask. Most will do so without asking and if they don't that's fine too.

My mother was from Germany. She always complained about the 'filthy' Americans, LOL. But she never wanted to move back to Germany.

I usually keep my shoes on at home. I tend to go outside a fair am out and don’t need to be untying, retyping, and changing shoes all day. Also, I used to have a dog, and she wore the same bare feet in and out, so why can’t I have the same shoes in or out.

Same here. I am astonished to discover that people think not wearing shoes in the house is the norm. In my 65 years of life I've encountered maybe one person who wanted me to remove my shoes in their house.

The cultural tide is changing! It's bizarre that Americans often wear (outdoor) shoes in their own home -- obviously dirty and impractical! But this is getting less common among younger people.

Note to OP: No reason to feel emasculated. You're just not used to it.

Sidenote from Germany: People generally either wear just socks or socks and slippers indoors. But with guests, they'll often make an exception. As a rule -- unless you're a plumber or other service person -- you take your shoes off when you arrive at someone else's house. That is, unless explicitly invited not to. However, many people have extra slippers for guests.

I have a friend who likes to have parties where you dress all fancy but she makes everyone take off their shoes. It's just weird in a party setting like that where you're dressed up.

When I have someone over, they typically just do it because I have my shoes off.

My in-laws need to be politely reminded to take their shoes off every time they come over. They wear shoes all the time in their house and it is filthy. I guess when you get old you dgaf?

Growing up (US lower middle class) we always wore shoes in my house but overall cleanliness was pretty poor. Now that I know better we don’t wear shoes in my house.

I don’t get it. Does no one live in a place with paved roads and sidewalks? Where is all this mud coming from? Sure, if it’s wet and snowy out, leave your shoes on the mat, but every day? I go in and out too much for that. Try not licking your floor and you probably won’t get sick from whatever you do bring in.

I have hardwood floors in my house with rugs in some seating areas. I wouldn't walk on the rugs in outdoor shoes but those are the only off-limits areas. Keep your shoes on for the main parts of the house.
