I can see him sitting in front of his computer wearing his 1:59:40 letsrun goat t-shirt, laughing at the chaos he is causing.

This week I missed the wake and funeral of the mother of a lifelong friend - my fiend and I were in kindergarten together and I remember his mother from a field trip then and saw her several times over the years. I sent a Mass card and joined with other friends in sending a floral wreath. The wake was on Tuesday evening and the funeral Mass on Wednesday morning. Both were work days for me and I additionally had a medical appointment Wednesday morning before work. Last weekend I also had called my friend and spoke with him for 34 minutes according to my iPhone.

I have no car (I live in NYC) and it is not especially easy to get to the suburban location of the wake and funeral on a work day. My employer allows bereavement days only for one's close family members.

There are ways of comforting bereaved family members other than attending the funeral. Maybe Kipchoge did something similar to what I did.

I am old enough to remember when Pre died. I was a junior high school student then and I remember one of my teammates saying a few year later that the Russians had bumped him off.

Perhaps he didn’t attend because he’s training, parenting, farming, and the roads are difficult to travel. But then again, no man is limited, so the roads are a nonissue
