Mantz's form is pristine compared with Lelisa Desisa, Ethiopian 2013 Boston champ, feet all over the place, very displeasing form, but strong as an ox.
Where is the study where it helps? That should be easy to do.
i have seen way to many people with upper bodies all over the place to think it matters much. We would like to look super smooth but it is more important to be efficient…
Cheserek (Edward not robert) has a huge upper body that's all over the place. I would say Lopez Lomong as well. these guys have terrible arm swing alignment and huge upper bodies, they kinda defy science the way they run fast.
Trunk muscle fatigue and its negative relationship with running economy (RE) is frequently recognized by practitioners but lacks evidence-based support. Thus, this three-armed randomized controlled crossover pilot trial (RCT)...
If you examine the bodies of elite Japanese runners such as Honda Kawasaki and Yuki Toyota, you will see they both have overall height under 5'8, much of which is long muscular legs and a short abdominal thorax. No Americans have this body type besides Connor mantz. He has the perfect body for marathon running because it's efficient and aerodynamic. He was very lucky and blessed to be born with this body type, and this is why he will have a long, voluptuous career as a marathoner.

You're correct but unfortunately Japanese style marathoners only run well in COLD weather.
Hence why Yuki Tamagachi won Boston when it was freezing rain, but he will never win a summer Olympic metal.
Mantz's form is "atrocious" to the eye but he's an outlier in the sense that it works for him and it's probably efficient in its own way even though it is debatable whether it is optimal or not for him.
PB's of 3:37, 13:10, 27:25, 1:00:55, 2:07:47, show that he has all the bases covered and all the prerequisites to continue to improve because he's only 27 years old. I think his ceiling in the marathon might be around 2:04:00 to 2:05:00/2:06:00, similar to strong Viking, Sondre Norstadt Moen, (27:20, 59, 2:05). Moen is built like a tank compared with Mantz.
If a limited foot speed runner like Navarro from France can run 205 with track times of around 1430 and 30 minutes, then logically Mantz can go much faster, even though logic sometimes gets knocked out the window in the marathon.
Mantz might never achieve 203 to 205 in the marathon but I think he will acquit himself well in a championship marathon because his mental strength is superb.
His marathon calculates to 29:50 pace, so he could probably run a tad faster than 30 minutes on the track, and probably close to 27:30
I was thinking the same thing. How can a guy who can sustain under 4:50 per mile for a full marathon only be capable of 4:50 per mile for 10,000?
I think Mantz can run 2:05-2:06, but I think that’s his potential. And he won’t do it unless he recovers more after big marathon efforts and doesn’t leave his race in his training.
Also, 27 is not young anymore. It’s not old either, but, his peak marathon years are right now. Not five or ten years from now.
Remind not to do a 24 minute circuit weight training routine before a race.😂
”Both workload-matched fatigue protocols-consisting of 24 min of a circuit weight routine-elicited comparable rates of perceived exertion, heart rate responses, and lactate accumulations.”

Where does it compare a tense to relaxed upper body? All I see is one where if some is tired their economy drop. That isn’t shocking but it also isn’t what we are talking about

I don't see anything in the article that really mentions what we are talking about.
With biomechanics, the problems are usually circular arm swings instead of parallel, or they are criss crossing their legs every step. Hail geb is a HUGE violator or moving his arms in circles instead of back and forth, which is a big reason why I always disliked him as a runner.
As far as steps go, the best way to get your kids to stop criss crossing is by putting in the stationary bicycle. Is will force them to stop crossing. I spent tons of time around John McDonnell in the late 90s, and then again the final 3 years of his life. Before I became a coach, he taught me that bicycling is ALWAYS better than swimming because swimming doesn't use any muscles or movements involved in running. John felt that cycling "mimicked" running much more.
Now, do I agree with John? Not necessarily. But that's what he believed, and the stationary has helped with my kids form. That's we go to the gym.and cycle every Sunday.
He's done too many miles to change anything now, apart from relaxing.
Agree. The longer you've been doing something, the harder it is to change your ways. Can't teach an old dog new tricks.
When I'm coaching my kids up at the college, I definitely make "recommendations" to them its a mechanical inefficiency, but there are limitations and exceptions to me attempting to alter their form, especially when it gets too "hands on". As a rule of thumb, we try to adhere to the same-gender policies when it comes to hands on work. This greatly reduces the risk of sexual harrassment allegations, which are becoming more and more prominent nowadays. I don't assist in aiding a female runner stretch unless she asks me and there is no other female available.
In the long run, a coach is an ADVICE GIVER. Nothing more, nothing less. Either you listen to us or you dont. We are not dictators. It's sad many young hot-rod coaches don't understand that.
Coaching at what College? Is this true or a made up story? I've never heard anyone mention coaching for a college in a specific town and not mention the College. Something seems fishy.

I don't think cycling or swimming really replicate running. But yet that's the whole point of cross training is to strengthen the muscles around those used in your primary sport. And, or course, get your heart rate up.
That's cool you got to hang with j-mac while he was still around. I knew him during the Allistar Craig era.
I object to "a Japanese" to describe someone from Japan. A country should have nouns for its people, instead of substituting an adjective as a noun. Something like Japanite, or Japaner. The Germans already probably call them Japaners.
How do you have the time to be a business owner, coach, and professor? That’s 3 jobs!
It's 3 sources of income, but they are all 3 part time work. I have to order and purchase the supplies for my salons, and also do the hiring, but the salons are managed by young ladies that I've hired. They clean the beds, run the cash register, open and close the business each day.
They must inform me immediately if a bulb burns out
The only bulb that is burned out is the one in your head. You don't own a salon, you aren't a college professor, and you aren't a college coach. You're just a wacky troll.
1. When 18 min 5k runners calls a 2:09 marathon runner fat.
2. When a 18 min 5k runners want to critique the form of the best American marathoner in the country.
Fans and people who have never competed in the big name pro sports critique those athletes all the time. Think of how much the players on the super bowl teams are hearing and receiving it right now. How is letsrun different? And why are you taking their critique so seriously?
There is no speed qualification for critiquing the form of runners. It is obvious to the eye of any student of the sport. And while good, he is not the best marathoner in America.
Except studies show no correlation between the eye test and how efficient a runners form actually is, which is probably why Alberto constantly injured runners by trying to change their form.
For what it is worth... when I did my masters degree we tested 25 guys (between 30-34 minute 10K local and former collegiate runners in Tucson). We V02 max tested them three times over about a two month period. And we did a submaximal (running economy) test at 7 min mile pace.
One of the things that we noticed is how "form" didn't seem to correlate with their running economy. Guys who seemed to have smooth form were scattered up the rankings for running economy along with guys who looked raggedy. Funny thing was that the two guys in the study that were considered to have the best form... One was first in running economy. And the other one was last of the twenty five guys. Crazy.

It doesn’t matter when his form is atrocious. He always looks like he is pressing. If he wants to compete on the world stage he will need to learn to relax.

Bill Rodgers and Pete Pfitzinger both had awkward arm actions.
