Cephalopods that predate octopi evolved from some mollusk like creature prior to the Cambrian. The 8 arms would have emerged from one of these mollusk like creatures that evolved from a mollusk without 8 arms.
Spiders evolved from some tick like arachnid, first appearing around 380 million years ago. Early spiders were much more tick like. Their ancestors were arthropods, with the first 8 legged arachnids emerging somewhere along this line.
So mollusks split from this group prior to leg evolution into arachnids. The 8 limbed thing of octopi and arachnids is distinct.
