I don't know if this has changed but for a long time I'm not sure you were allowed to be a French citizen if you didn't smoke. Even outside France there were distance runners who did at least a bit of smoking. Hal Higdon once wrote a story about running the Kosice Marathon in the 60s. Buddy Edelen won and Higdon siaid Edelen went to his gym bag after the race and got out a cigarette. In Ron Hill's autobiography there's a photo of him at a social held by his running club with a glass of beer in one hand and a cigarette in the other.
