Is the quote a screw up by wejo or CJ? Going out in a time in a race is associated with a split. Imagine saying you are running the mile and you are going out in 59. Imagine saying you are going out in 2:59. Saying you are going out in 4 minutes, sounds like you are shooting for 5:20 and you have a goal of 4 at the 1200. If CJ goes out in 2:08, he either is a 4:16 marathoner or he is dumb.

Gets exhausting listening to CJ talk. Would be really cool to see him put a race together, but he's more concerned with running his mouth which never seems to tire
I love how CJ grinds and runs lots of races, but after watching the last three Boston Marathons I am a little weary of calling him "good at racing marathons."
he races too much and doesn't do enough speed training. The most he'll do is like 8 x 1k in 2:50, which isn't good enough
I agree that he races too much. Disagree that "speed" training is the reason for his shortcomings.
That being said, I wish him well and hope he has a breakthrough race.
I disagree with most of you. I think there will be a lead pack, albeit small that will 'go for it' because they've got nothing to lose. Staying in the main pack for a war of attrition will not work for them. If there is going to be a surprise it's going to come from a risk taker that feels great and runs the race of a lifetime.

If the temperature is nearing 70° or over, your take sounds like the opposite of what I would tend to think would work.
There’s no way the lead pack goes out that fast. If it did, it would be a perfect situation for runners on the cusp, to give them some room, and pick off enough runners to make the team. The weather conditions, alone, will prevent a fast pace.
why not? I could see either Mantz or Albertson wanting or setting a hot pace from the start and you never know if someone else is feeling anxious and starts hammering from early
I can't see 30-40 Americans running the first half in 64:00, especially in warm conditions. I don't think there are that many Americans that can run that just for a half marathon. I like CJ because he races often but I don't think he's being realistic.

Why would Mantz, with 13:10/27:25 PRs, want to set a fast pace? If someone else wants to run 2:08 pace, he can give them some room and easily run them down by 2O miles or sooner. It doesn’t make sense for anyone in the field to go out in 64, anyway.

CJ ran those two 2:11 races in Nov and Dec. He's fit, I expect an excellent race for him. That being said, there's a lot of talent at his level or better. It's a stretch for CJ to make the team, but not impossible. One interesting thing at the trials is the Rupp factor. Here's a guy who could win, or be 8th or 9th. We'll find out soon. He had a reasonable warm up race, assuming he didn't do a big taper for that. He's two+ years out from his most recent 2:06, but is he back there? That is a stretch too.
I was thinking that's a dream race- 1:04 at the half with a big pack and watch them fall off as the leaders negative split.
Legit no way they go out at 1:04 and have a single person negative split. I think even if you had a gigantic pack with a bunch of guys blocking the wind, nobody will negative split towards a sub 2:08.
Weather is not ideal at all.
The people who could chase a sub 2:08 are unlikely to risk blowing up entirely to get that time.
I agree but it looks like, now, Chelimo is going out at 2:08 pace. It'll be interesting to see:

I like CJ. I do wonder if in the prep he overdid it in terms of prepping for the heat/humidity in somewhat insane fashion. Sure it might not *hurt* though him getting sick a lot this buildup is not ideal and certainly could be related to doing his training in crazy conditions with the heat lamps and humidifiers. As it turns out, the conditions aren't going to be insane with moderate humidity and only somewhat warm (high 60s) the last quarter of the race. It feels like the top guys (Mantz/Young/Fauble et al.) have done more than enough for that. If Korir, Chelimo took Saina's lead and went to hotter areas in Kenya too, they'll be prepared as well.
I think if this goes out fast, there will be some sub-2:08s. Korir and Mantz going under would not surprise me at all.
