1. Sad news. I hope the best for friends and family.
2. Might be too early to publicly talk about cause of death if there is no immediate threat to the public. (To respect the friends and family that may read this)
3. Eventually it may be important to talk about it in order to better educate younger children the dangers of certain things. I get a little frustrated when locals hide the cause of death in the case of something like drunk driving, out of respect for the family members. We can't go back and change the past, but why not use it as a teaching moment for other local kids? It may save a life in the future.
Young and health people do get sick and die. And young people do go to the doctor for what should be routine procedures and things go horribly wrong. It is understandable that the family may not want to share what happened and just wants privacy especially in a world where people online like to speculate about a young athlete's death to advance their agenda and get clicks.

When a famous 29 year old world class athlete dies and you don't want speculation as to cause of death, report the cause of death.

Could very well be medical mishap. That's one of the leading causes of death in USA per a John Hopkins study. If so, it should not be covered up.
As MM said, Shawn was a great teammate. He loved the big moments and was invested in the success of the team and his teammates. It was confirmed that he had been battling a sickness for a little while now, but I don't know any other specifics.
PS. There was another thread on this but it started off on the wrong foot so I deleted it. Please be respectful. You can talk about his positive drug test but only in a respectful way. And we don't need this turning into a debate as to whether an Mrna vaccine may have contributed to his death. We also don't need people speculating about AIDS since Barber was gay. I must admit that the AP didn't help as speculation is bound to occur when you say someone died of "medical complications." What the heck does that mean? But we dont' need wild conjectures. Unless you have some source, please do not wildly speculate.
Medical complications can be any number of things. AS an example: You go to hospital for surgery. After the surgery, you develop a blood clot that travels to your heart and kills you.
Years ago, I had an employee whose kidneys failed. He was in the ICU for 4 days. He was moved from the ICU and died 2 days later due to an infection.
Crap can happens.
I don't know why he died and will not speculate: 29 is just too young. Truly the good die young...

Can you report the cause of the death before an autopsy is performed?

Of course this thread had to take the way it did. The letsrun founders supported the vaccine skepticism and here we are.
But in really life people die in all ages from normal body failures, whatever that might be in the pole vaulters case. If you are old enough, you can think of a couple of people who passed away way too early and it wasn't an accident.
