Well, considering that he's the best in the world at 3k, that he handled the steeple easily at 16 or 17 (8:26 being his best), and that he's taller now, I'd think the world record would be something he'd get within two or three races, although Girma is no slouch on the flat and he's the new wr holder. Notably, Jakob has stated that it is his intention to break all the distance records at 1500m and up. He just turned 23 so he has time.
This may be an unpopular opinion, but I
a) agree with you that he could break the steeple world record. The barriers are less of a “barrier” than some think.
b) do NOT think he could break the 5k world record. It’s a stronger record and slightly longer than ideal for him
Anyone share this combination of opinions? Or am I off my rocker?
What lesson did Kerr teach him? That if you have a bad day, an opponent will run a once in a lifetime race can beat you by a few 100ths? Peter Rono did better than that.
LOL - it wasn’t a bad day. The illness was just his excuse for the fact that he left himself wide open. He demonstrated countless times in timetrial races earlier in the year exactly what his max capability was - and it was only c. 1.5 seconds faster than the rest of the field. In a championship race that’s not enough to secure a victory when you don’t have your rabbits or wave lights.
Jakob has been the favorite 3 WC races in a row… first he lost to Tefera. Then to Weightman. Then Kerr. How many times is the guy going to have a ‘bad day’ when it counts before we start to recognize it for what it is… he’s not a 1500m championship racer… he’s just a really good 1500m ‘pace setter’. That’s fine I guess, but he now needs to move on to the 5,000m.
Reigning Olympic champ isn’t a 1500m championship racer lol
Jakob’s PB is 1.88 seconds faster than the next guy in the final which is a larger gap than Cheruiyot had when he won from the front in 2019.
The last 300 in Budapest was quite weak by Jakob’s standards. He closed in 40.2 when he ran 3:27 in Silesia but could only manage 40.1 at Worlds. He was also visibly ill in both finals.
Pretty amazing that a guy who can win every Diamond League race and get silver at Worlds is not good enough to be racing 1500m in your opinion.
Why are afraid he beat the 5000m WR? For now he is setting the 5000m WR in his pocket (face this fact)
and now all his energy is focused on the mile.
As for the steeple 3000m its harder than you think because it needs at least 1 year of preparation. If you think he can beat El Bakkali in the few first races you are dreaming.

Dear Malmo, I beg to differ a little. You must always add that you would like Jakob to get the WR as separate and different from his actual ability to do so given that El G did his WR in far superior conditions of anthropogenic 2G Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) in 1998 while Jakob is required to do it in anthropogenic 5G environment?

That's a hard ask right there.
Hey, just a heads up - your thing was a bit amusing at first, but now you are clearly running out of ideas and even at a good day you are at like 2/10 tops.
2023 was Jakob's finest season. Easily. May very well have been the greatest season of any runner in 1500, mile, 2k, 3k, and two mile disciplines (plus WC gold 5k).
After seeing that video, I am sure he can go sub 8:00 (dare I say sub 7:50?) if he chose to run it. I'm that impressed. The problem here is the risk, not necessarily of injury, but the risk he'd eff up his status in the flat races. 1500m - 5000m, he's already on the razors edge. Maybe if he gets the 1500m WR, what else is there to prove? It certainly would be exciting to watch
To me, this was more impressive than Jager's debut, and I said then Jager was the best steeplechaser I've ever seen (as a novice).
I'm eager to see Jakob 1) get the gold medal, 2) set the WR, then turn his focus to the steeplechase. With his ability to prepare, focus and concentrate, I think the WR would be done.
I agree that he could get near the steeple WR, if not break it.
But I don't think that he has the abilities to be a winning championship steepler.
Even if he can race the event 5-8 seconds (or more) faster than Jager did, runners like Bakali and Girma would gap him by 5+ meters on the final lap, or simply off the final water jump.
Oh, and since he wants to leave his mark in the 1500, by the time he would even move to the steeple he will be even less athletic. Now Kiprop, there is a guy who could have gone sub-7:50 if he wasn't chasing the much more interesting 3:26.

If you’re tall and have decent natural form, it really doesn’t take much to deal with the barriers. I did minimal steeple training before my first one and ran 9:29 (had 8:52/15:16 3k/5k PRs at the time). My next race was 9:19 (8:37 3k by that point), Jakob would certainly be in the 7:50-55 range in the right race within his first couple attempts.
So, what's your assessment? Should he be doing more steeple?
After seeing that video, I am sure he can go sub 8:00....
Gee....don't go out on a limb or anything.
There is absolutely zero doubt that he could break eight. He ran a 7:54 2 mile for crissakes. Anyone with a shred of hurdling ability [ Which yes he demonstrated in that long ago race] will, without a doubt, break 8 in the SC when combined with that kind of two mile time.
So yes, the question is how much time / effort would he have to commit to the event in order to break the world record.

I'm not sure why "tall" is a factor. Most of the best steeplechasers are not tall.
In four years of college I did no steeple training. Well, not really, I did one workout in which I ran two 400s over hurdles. That's it. But for four years the only preparation was jumping over a few hurdles days before my races.

You are too much over-evaluating Jakob. He can barely beat a Girma in a 3000m.
Don't make of him a God.
Not sure by the way if he can gold medal at Paris in both 5000m and 1500m.
I'm sure he won't medal in the 1500m because we all know his troubles in tactical races and i think It will be hard for him to medal in the 5000m too. Ethiopians have understood now that they need to put on a fast race and then if they will then i see one among Aregawi, Kejelcha, Kiplimo and Cheptegei to win It. I don't see Jakob winning in a 12'40" race.

Oh, NOW they have understood it? Weren't you the one spamming this board saying they know what to do before Budapest? How they finally figured it out and were going to blow Jakob out of the water? But what happened? The same thing that always happens - you being wrong.
