Yes Clayton Young's 2:08:00 is a clear indication that he definitely cannot run 2:07:59
And 62:30 is probably too fast. His PR is 2:07 from a few months ago, it's not likely he is now a 2:04 high/2:05 low guy.
I agree, though before and after Chicago he thought he was in more like 2:06:30ish shape it sounded like. He obviously still ran a pretty good race and PB performance, but thinks he hasn't nailed a marathon yet. Seems fair because he trains with Clayton Young (2:08:00), and there seems to be some separation (more than 13 seconds) between the two in training.
This effort is overall encouraging. If they "jog" the first half of the Trials in 1:05-1:07 being able to close in a half split like this (perhaps a tad slower) should be good enough to win.

It was a planned pmp. He said he ran it a little too fast. He never said that was his marathon pace. Does bode well for him though.

There is a history of people doing runs like this and then not coming close in the race. It is just too easy for people to do runs like this 10s to fast.

Only way 2:09 wins is if it is over 75 degrees.
3 of the last 4 trials have been won in 2:09. In fact no one has ever run faster than 2:09 at the trials. Even with perfect weather I doubt anyone will be willing to rub sub 2:09 pace from the gun.
I think it will come down to Mantz and Rupp if they both have good days. If they have an off day I think Young,Panning,fauble and a few others will be in the mix. As far as a favorite for third I would have to go with Young, but who knows, maybe Abdi will play the hero again. Haha
Mantz ran a great workout, but CJ has shown us tons of fantastic workouts and it never equates to an amazing race. Mantz has to be the favorite, but the marathon can be brutal and even the best can have off days.
Putting aside the way this was framed (ok so he ran 1:02-flat), there aren't a ton on the start line that can run that for a half, let alone in an 18 miler in a normal training week. He wrote in the comments that he took it too fast. If he can handle the heat he can make the team.

I believe Mantz can run under 2:07 if he gets the fueling and cramping issues in the last few miles figured out. But the Trials will likely be warm, and nobody is running even close to 2:06 there. And it doesn’t matter. Shoot for top 2 (or 3).

Right and looking at the heart rate values/drift it would indicate he ran this right at his aerobic threshold based on 2.5-5% difference between the last 30 minutes and the preceding 30 minutes. 2:05/2:06 in a perfect race isn't out of the question

I agree, but, at most, for the not very efficient runner, they are worth 1 sec per lap or 1:45 over the marathon distance. For an already extremely efficient runner, it’s probably about a minute.

it is Orlando. Temps in the low to mid 70s are to be expected. I wouldn’t be shocked for a low 2:10 to win. People play it safe and run a fast last 10miles instead risking by pushing hard. Go out in like 66 and come back in 64.

Those shoes don't appear to be working for American women. 9 women under 2:17 the last 2 years? Here are the lady qualifiers for the Trials. On fast courses, not 1 under 2:18 and only 2 under 2:21:40 over the past 2 years.
