LRC note. We changed the title of the thread. It was initially entitled, "Rumors CONFIRMED - Dartmouth distance coach McNulty FIRED" which we don't know to be true.
How does such an unqualified coach, especially as a white male, get a D1 distance coaching job?
Compromise candidate of a fragmented search committee? Search chair and AD agree that X is their #1 candidate. When offered, X declines the position. Search chair says Well, clearly Y is our best pick now. AD says Hell no, I can live with Z but definitely not Y. Search chair says No to Z. They haggle a while, agree they need someone, so offer to Q, knowing they can make a change after a year or two if needed (and maybe pressure X to reconsider) while hoping Q somehow exceeds expectations. I don’t know anything about the Dartmouth search but scenarios like this happen all the time.
Moderators are deleting posts saying he was fired. Does anyone think he resigned on his own?
He was a mediocre D3 coach who lucked out and got a job at one of the most prestigious universities and cross country teams in the nation. He would never leave that unless he was forced out.

He could probably sense he was going to get the boot so rather than having “fired” on the resume he stepped down. Easier to give an excuse about stepping down in a future job interview than trying to explain “fired”
I'm really fascinated by this whole thing. This guy was clearly unqualified. So how did he get hired? Is he actually gone? I don't blame him for anything. He never should have been in this position. Of course he was going to fail (this was obvious to everyone here when he was hired). It's a horrible indictment of the whole XC/Track program leadership (and AD). Did he really have the team doing 5 workouts a week? Is that how Porscha thinks distance runners should train, and that's why he was hired? As another poster said, he could literally have lifted a program from Daniels and probably kept his job.
Brojos, when are we going to get the story on this?
alumni have not received any comms from Dartmouth re; McNulty.
Usually the college is pretty quick to send something out. Although the holidays can mess this up, and the director of T/F embarrassed the program a few years ago by sending out comms with grammar mistakes and whatnot. So it's possible the athletic department has asked track and cross country to clear emails with them first, delaying news releases.
