He can still be an a-hole, but he done the best job of any public figure of owning his mistakes, apologizing, paying the penalties, reaching out to make amends with those he wronged (not sure how successfully), and actually put in serious work with a therapist. This is literally the model to follow when you hurt people and make a mess of your own life. You can still dislike him, but the fact is he's done the work that is required for personal growth and understanding the consequences of your actions.

Armstrong was and continues to be a cheat, a liar and a user of people. He does not fund cancer research and never has. He is not doing much of anything to stop cancer.
There is evidence that his use of steroids contributed to his testicular cancer.
There were plenty of talented cyclists that did not cheat and use PEDs. Darren Baker, John Peters, Marc Hagenlocher, Scott Nydam were all clean riders that were not able to race at the highest levels, because they chose to follow the rules.

you seem to forget, leave out, or don't know that there was at least one clean rider in the tour when Lance busted onto the scene (the defending champ Greg LeMond who dropped out because he was being dropped by the whole field - thinking there was something wrong with his health - only to find out when he saw a doctor that the rest of the field was on EPO). and because he was not a doper, he soon retired from the sport.

There is no evidence that Greg was clean. In fact, that he won the tour of doping 3 times strongly suggests otherwise.
He was also not dropped by the whole field in 1991 as defending champion, and he didn't drop out either as defending champion: he rode in yellow for a while, but ultimately faded to 7th. And fyi, Lance's first win was in 1999. long after Greg's retirement from the TdF.

When the rides were at their toughest, he buried people. He has owned up to stuff, and he made more money for cancer research than any other human. As runners, we have to appreciate his racing. Not reformed but good reputation is better now than it was 9 years ago.
Similar to Mike Tyson, OJ Simpson, Mike Vick, and Tiger Woods. They all did really bad things but are still celebrated widely.
Even Justin Gatlin repaired his reputation, but Marion Jones is still only looked at in a 100% negative light. Everyone else I listed, including Lance, is around 50-50 and Tiger Woods is still looked at favorably by 99% of golf fans.
