I feel like what I said on the Friday 15 SC podcast last week is being somewhat misinterpreted.
We were talking about people whether Katelyn Tuohy will make the 2024 Olympic team and were discussing people we'd rank ahead of Katelyn Tuohy for potential Olympic 5000 spots. Elly Henes' name came up and I said this.
This is interesting to me. Will Laure Henes purposely sabotage Katelyn Tuohy's training in the spring so her daughter can make the team? That's kind of a joke people, but it's interesting. If you've been coaching Katelyn all year and you get to the Trials, and then she is racing your daughter, who are you for?
I think if that was my scenario, I would hope my son would win win (the race) but I would think this is what sports is about.
We were recording it live without edits. I immediately said sabotage was kind of a joke. The key thing to me was intellectually interesting was this, "Who would you be for as a coach? Who would you be rooting for?"
The more I've thought about it. I don't really think it's that hard for a coach to handle. You coach people all the time who you are closer to than others, but when they race, you want them all to do well and you see how it plays out . Only a horrific coach would play favorites and I think Laurie Henes is amazing.
Henes in the 10000. She screwed up last year because everyone was worried about the “World Standard” but she beat Rogers in the 10 earlier in the year.

If it were me, I would feel uncomfortable having a coach that also coached their child at the same time...just seems like it could cause (even unconsciously) favoritism. But hey, it's Tuohy's choice, I'm not her, she's an adult and gets to do what works best for her. If Henes makes the team and Tuohy doesn't, I wonder if it will sow seeds of doubt in her mind though.

Agreed, it's all fun and games until a team spot (as well as money) is on the line.
They are all friends and will all be happy regardless of who wins or makes the team. However, if I were concocting a conspiracy theory I would go with Laurie would coach Tuohy to beat her daughter because first she chose another coach and second that coach actually competes against her college team. Mike Smith's wife competes or did compete against both of them. So far no drama.

This is all a nonissue and all about nothing. Both coaches, Henes & Smith, will coach their athletes to the best of their abilities. There are no conspiracies. Just some conspiracy theories and people wearing tin foil hats. There are plenty of you out there that don't like Laurie Hens but she has more integrity to not coach Touhy the best that she is capable of coaching her.
Tuohy is going to gradually acclimate herself to altitude. It is what Nikki Hiltz did when she also started going to altitude. Tuohy will more than likely make the move to altitude in due time. Until then, and in the short term, she's going to primarily train in the environment she feels the most comfortable in.
Wow. To know that she had that much about the integrity of Henes, you have to be her significant other. None of the rest of us really knows her personally. Tell us more. Sounds like you are actually the drama person since you know all about her personal life.
This is dumb. How many athletes has Mark Coogan coached over the years to race against his daughter? Or how many athletes has Mike Smith coached to compete against his own wife? There are countless examples.
Maybe Laurie wants both to succeed and make the team? IDK, just a thought. Usually coaches want all their athletes to succeed. But what do I know. I am the only poster here under 30.
