No CJ or Fauble in the top 10.

The 2024 Olympic standard is 2:08:10 not 2:11:30.

VF 2'/3's aren't gonna drop him from 2:11:37 to sub 2:08:10

If he actually ran a smart race with other elites where he drafted off people for most of it, plus he ran in a better supershoe than the brooks garbage, I could see those effects combining to drop him to 2:08:10, or at least meaningfully faster than 2:11:37. But regardless, he doesn’t need to run 2:08:10 to qualify for the Olympics. He just has to run 2:11:30 and get top 3 (or maybe top 2) at the trials.

I would replace Chelenga with Fauble and I believe Panning will win. His Budapest performance is hugely underrated. Great list.

CJ’s half marathon PR is like 1:03? That's fast for us mere mortals but not quick enough for someone who'd like to run sub 2:10

8 x 1km in 2:50 is a good workout but I bet he could do 10-12 x 1km in 2:50. So why doesn’t he? These types of workouts are certainly good enough for other elite marathoners. But not for him?

He interval workouts aren’t long enough and his tempo runs aren’t quick enough. And he needs to run more of his tempos on solid ground, not on the treadmill. It's not like he's training through a Minnesota winter. He's in California. GET OUTSIDE.

What's interesting to me is that it seems like CJ is now a pretty classic strength runner who gets more competitive the longer he goes, and his WA profile seems to bear that out with most of his short distance PRs from college or not nearly as strong. But in high school I remember he was a good miler and made state finals the year with guys like Jantzen Oshier and Elias Gedyon (both who threatened 4 minutes). Not sure what happened to those wheels.

Not that it really matters (I don't think he was running those times on massive tailwind days anyway)....I was just trying to learn something new (i.e. if there was some weird thing why Grandma's would be considered "record eligible" and Boston and CIM would not be.

But back to CJ: I honestly can't understand his training and progression. It is very unique. Don't get me wrong, I greatly respect guys that have run much, much faster than I ever could.... but from what I've seen from his training and racing and progression and attitude it's all a lot different from other 2:10 guys I've known.

I think this makes 8 marathons for him that are UNDER 2:12:00 yet his PR is 2:10:23, that's crazy

Sage graduated from an Ivy League two decades ago or so and since then has no professional or educational credentials other than " running YouTube Influencer." He is now in a physical decline and gets about 5k views each YouTube video. What about ANY of that screams "smart"?

Grandma’s is not record eligible but performances there are eligible for Olympic and World Championships qualifying. Boston and CIM are not eligible for either because the net elevation loss is greater than 1m per km.

The auto is 2:08:10. Not everyone in the olympics will have the auto standard. After that they'll use the descending order of rankings, but to get in on ranking you will need a minimum of 2:11:30. But as CJ pointed out, it is doubtful a time slower than 2:11:30 will be top 3 at the olympic trials. Even if it's 75 degrees 3rd place will probably be at least that.

Someone like Rupp who ran a high 2:08 and top 10 at a WMM (bonus points for that placing at WMM) who could still be top 3 in time like 2:10 and getting big bonus points for top 3 at US championships will be able to get in to the olympics even though they don't have a sub 2:08:10 marathon. The amount of people who think you need the olympic/world standard to qualify is shocking. We just saw McGorty and Notosha Rogers make it to the world championships without the auto standards.

Boston is certified so can be used for world ranking (with adjustment for drop), but doesn't look like CIM is certified for even that.
