I don't get why you'd pay $50 dollars to run a 5k with 1000 walkers when u could do it by yourself from your front door? Who's weirder?
I don't get why you'd use the $ AND say the word "dollars."
Maybe OP meant 50-dollar dollars, i.e., dollars that cost $50 each, and that is why they are so confused as to why people would pay fifty times what something’s worth.
god forbid someone spend 50 whole bucks on a form of group exercise. that's maybe double a one-off yoga/orange theory/whatever depending where u live. who cares?
the obvious answer is OP got smoked by better competition (more talented, harder working, not crybaby b*tches like you) and wants to put others down to feel better about himself. classic coward bully syndrome. NOT ON MY WATCH.
Its obvious OP has never volunteered for a packet pickup or anything like that. Most these 5ks are charity oriented and ran by volunteers. Therefore, the race is not all about you and your ideal standards to PB.
Raced a local 5K this morning and i think at least half of the over 1000 participants walked it. Why do people spend $50 to wake up at 5am to walk 5K on the road?! I don’t get it.
The elites probably ask the same question about us.

I do find these threads funny, I’m at college and I’m faster these losers they are too slow to run. Or its I run competitively on track or cross country look at by “big gun” time.
Meanwhile the elites, have finished, showered and had breakfast before any of these “faster Let’s runner” wannabes cross the line

Charity. I run a 5k a lot faster and often win first female and it still takes a charity to get me out there.

At least in my area, most of the 5K races are for charity. Looking at my calendar over the next few months: on 11/18 we have a run that benefits a church group that donates to disasters: on 11/23 we have a huge race that donates to keep a homeless and jobs shelter functioning; on 12/2 we have a race that benefits young girls getting involved in athletics; on 12/16 we have a race that benefits free legal counsel for those who cannot afford it. Hope this helps you to understand.
We have three parkruns locally here in Seattle, but walking $50 races is still very popular, much more popular than Parkrun in fact . . . for the medal.
I sometimes to Parkrun but there's very little buzz and competition. So sometimes I do the expensive races as well. But I really hate the obsession with the gaudy pointless medals.
Here in Seattle, there are certainly a few charity runs, but the two outfits that run the most races are Orca Running and Snohomish Running Club. Both are for-profit and give minimally to charity. They run expensive but well organized races with obnoxious large gaudy medals.
-perhaps the charity associated with is important to them?
-perhaps setting a social goal to walk a 5k is the equivalent to you of racing a 5k? Everyone’s level and capability is different, and for some, committing to a 5k with a couple friends even to walk it is a big step in their fitness journey.
The same can be said about 99% of college runners. Why do people wake up early for practice and dedicate their life to training when they’ll never accomplish anything worthwhile? By the OP’s logic, any college runner who can’t break 3:37 for 1500, 13:10 for 5000, or 28:00 for 10000 is wasting their time and there’s no logic behind the decision.
yeah because running 13.11 in college equals walking 5k in an hour saturday morning.

Why? For fun, for comraderie, for charity. Some for the competition, some to see if they can finish without stopping.
It's a good question. My local running scene has no fast people, so I would win literally every single race I lined up to if I entered. To me, there's no point in paying money and spending extra time on a Saturday to tempo a 5k or 10k by myself, yet people seem confused when I try to explain this to them and why I don't have any interest in running the local races. I already run 6 miles per day and do one or two workouts per week. Why would I pay money to do something I'm already doing for free? People are strange.
I bet you get really pissed if your French fries are only warm instead of hot.
