Gotta hand it to my old man. 1:47 at 73 to win his age group in a major race. He’s dealt with his fair share of injuries through his running career but his current recipe for success is 40-50km of quality running per week and weight training X3 per week. Sounds like his addition of weight training (which he never used to do) along with lowering his weekly mileage by about 20km have been the biggest changes he’s made in the last 6 months or so which have kept the injuries at bay and see him perform at his best.
Quite inspiring. What can the old SOB manage for 5k? Around 23 minutes?
Yes bang on! He’s currently running around 22:30-23:00. Dipped under 22 about a year ago.
Can you briefly describe his weight training regimen?
I asked him about that. He said he keeps it pretty basic. Weighted squats, weighted lunges, pull-ups, push-ups and repeats this every other day. Doesn’t go too heavy on the weights. Aims for a weight he can do 15-20 reps on.

Ed Whitlock was in another hemisphere as far as ability. One year I ran just under an hour for 10 miles and Ed ran 60:08 for a hilly 10 mile race at age 69. But this man at 73 running a half marathon in 1:47 is very good. Congratulations 🎊 👏
To the OP: That's a great performance at an age where 99% of his peers would be winded just walking up a couple of flights of stairs!
Your dad is a role model for healthy aging. More seniors should follow his example. You never know who might be motivated to do something about their poor health habits when they see your dad do this.
Update on his 1:47. He just sent me a photo of him posing on the side of the course fully stopped, taken by one of the race photographers. Without that stop he would have probably run a 1:45-1:46. His reason for stopping for the photo - “sometimes you just have to enjoy the moment”. He’s run over 200 half marathons now.
