Right now this format is super effective for helping athletes qualify for the Trials, but what happens when the world's best athletes skip Majors to run these types of events instead? I see positives and negatives to that reality. I'd be curious to hear opinions.
The marathon Olympic Trials standard should be WAY faster. 2:18 is nothing. It should be 2:13 - women are running 2:13 (and faster). Either 2:13 or limited to the top 75 athletes.
There are going to be over 200 people in the Olympic Trials marathon in 2024. That is foolish. 2:18 turns the Olympic Trials marathon into the hobby jogger badge of honor.
If we raise the standard, we will also see the USA become more competitive on the world stage.
