It’s every one’s opinion, but in mine the best Is who now owns the WR.
You can’t compare times from different eras. It’s who dominates over the era they competed. And it’s always better to win major championships, many WR holders never won an Olympic medal or WC.
Kipchoge ran 2:01:09 at age 37! Can you imagine what he would have done in super shoes at 23? I don't care what people say, I've been 23 and I've been 37. You slow down a lot in those years.
Plus 11 WMM wins and 2 olympic golds? No Marathoner has ever come close to that level of dominance.
This all came after a stellar track career. 5,000 world champ at 18!?!? Who does that?
I keep hearing Kiptums WR followed up with some variation of "But of course Kipchoge is still the goat"
Um, no he's not. A 23 year old running in his 3rd marathon smashed his record. Pretty sure you can't be the GOAT if you don't have the world record. That's kind of the definition of greatest in running.
I even heard Total Running Productions say this in his latest video. It's like people just can't stand that Kipchoge has been dethroned.
Well, this is rich. Track 5000m and road 5K are, in fact, different events. A couple of years ago there hardly even were 5000m and 10000m meets open for recreational runners. Now there are some popping up, still they're not really mainstream.

You should've made your post a question, "Does anyone think EK is still the G.O.A.T after losing his WR"?
But no, you pop off as if you know what you're talking about...and you DON'T! I'll help you out with the below info and maybe you'll then pull you head out of your A**!
1) Former world record holder
2) 2 x Olympic Champion
3) World Champion
4) 11 x World Major Marathon Champion
5) First marathoner to run under 2:00 hours
That is the definition of the G.O.A.T! once KK matches and or surpasses the above he can claim G.O.A.T status. Until then, he has some work to do... a lot of work to do.
How many marathons has he won? How many medals does he have? How many championships has he won? How many years has he been the fastest in the world? How many of the best has he beat and over how many years? How many world records has he set?
Beat Kipchoge at all of those categories and you get into the conversation for the greatest of all time.
No one has ever started their marathon career like Kelvin Kiptum of Kenya. Plus are USA marathoners getting soft by requesting a 6 a.m. start time for the Olympic Trials?
Is KK on the path to GOAT status? Yes Sir! No one doubts that. The argument you're facing is that his body of work so far is no where near GOAT status. Although a big chunk of GOAT criteria is being a world record holder, it also requires winning the biggest races on the planet on the biggest stages. Once he achieves being an Olympic Champion and a World Champion, the conversation is valid.

Alright, I’ll give you credit for these points. I just don’t know why I’ve heard so many people defend Kipchoge when talking about Kiptum. Sort of like they’re insecure that fools like myself will see a new world record and think there’s a new sheriff in town.
Only hobby joggers refer to Kipchoge as the GOAT, true T&F fans know it's always been Bekele
i absolutely agree with you. kipchoge spent the first half of his career losing to bekele, lagat, el guerrouj, and farah. his 2003 WC win was an absolute fluke. even when kipchoge found success in the marathon, bekele was right up on him with the time despite being well passed his prime.

What a stupid take. No one in their right mind would say you aren't the greatest just because your marathon WR fell. Especially when you have 2 Olympic Golds (to his zero), and an expansive, and consistent track record (no pun) of winning major marathons in fast times.
I shouldn't have to tell anyone here that, but I guess I do. The WR isn't the be all, end all, and honestly it doesn't matter what age he did it. Was Dennis Kimmeto the GOAT as soon as he beat Wilson Kipsang's WR? No. Especially since all he did was appearances and 10 mile jogs for every other marathon after that (excluding London).
Eliud Kipchoge is the G.O.A.T. distance runner like Cy Young is still G.O.A.T. baseball pitcher. It doesn't matter that younger guys have more strikeouts. It doesn't matter that Cy Young couldn't throw an 85 m.p.h. fastball. Cy Young has the most wins. Isn't that what it's about, winning? Eliud Kipchoge has won, won again and won some more.
Yes. And this may change in 15 years when Kiptum is 38 (or 41) and if he keeps improving and winning.
Kiptum can have 4 Olympic Marathon Golds if his career is as long and successful as Eliud's.
