Nobody here thinks it was clean. The last 1k split though isn't that impressive or significant to me. 3:02 is fast at the end of a marathon no doubt but who cares? The OP compared it to Kipchoge - not me. Kipchoge averaged the whole damn thing faster than 3:00/k.

As the OP hinted at, she ran her last 2.195kms at 3:02/km pace.
She didn't run just her last km in 3:02; but I can see how people were confused, as the per km (/km) wasn't tacked on the end.
She has not "virtually matched" Kipchoge, dummy. She was 7.5% slower. Have you not looked at the results before posting?

Last 2k at 3’00 for kipchoge- 3’02 for assefa. Still hanging onto that clean thread?
Kipchoge was suffering big time from whatever bug he had so slowing markedly to 3 minute kms were not unexpected. Assefa on the other hand was running the race of her life. Their times basically met in the middle for that final part of the race.
I posted another comparison yesterday. That vs Wanjiru slugging it out for big money with Kebede in 2010 Chicago, with all the honours on the line 'only' finishing in 6:34...watch the video and see if anyone is not going full tilt there.
On the other hand, with the race, the record, the money -everything - sown up well before 40km, and after averaging 3:05's /km from 30km, in a totally relaxed fashion she pulls out a 6:39.
Now, for comparison, she has no prior pedigree over anything less than marathon, no progression since an 'ok' 800m. Wanjiru on the other hand, after a known prodigious junior career, knocked out a fast road 10km, an HM WR, the hot and smoggy Beijing OG, London with a hellava split in the middle before Chicago. All races against someone or for some prize, no time trials...and he has to spill his guts to shake off Kebede in 6:34.

She broke her HM record twice during the race. First half in 1:06:20 (her record was 1:07:28). Second half in 1:05:33 (5th best performance of the year and 28th all time). She obviously also broke her 15km and 20km records along the way too.
It’s very rare that people break their 5km record during a marathon. Even more rare for a 26 year old.

We are not talking about two male (or female) athletes but a woman runner virtually matching the best male marathon runner of all time, while destroying the previous world mark for a woman. It's hard to believe the lengths "fans" will go to hold on to their "fan"tasies.
I've seen this play out before, as a big cycling fan in the late 90s and into current day. I remember the forum arguments in the early 00s about Armstrong...it was so obvious he was dirty, but most absolutely bought the "came back from cancer and changed his body" story.
Operation Puerto in 2006 didn't even sway most people, even though Armstrong's two biggest rivals (and many more) were popped.
Still, it eventually came out, and I think T&F has yet to have it's "Operation Puerto" day, but it's coming.
