this is an INSANE story. it should be front page of LRC and the thread should have over 200 posts.
"ONLY ONE participant in the final of the men’s 100 metres; a steeplechase athlete who kept running after crossing the finish line to evade dope testing; several winners skipping the medal ceremony as they were worried about being asked to give samples."
"The number of participants fell by half as news spread that National Anti Doping Agency (NADA) officials had dropped in, a day after a purported video clip of the washroom at the stadium showed piles of used syringes."
"Meanwhile, empty packets of Recombinant Human Erythropoietin (EPO) injection, which is used as a performance enhancing drug, could be seen in the washroom on Tuesday."
An Indian athletics competition ended in farce when just one sprinter competed in the 100m final and another athlete continued running beyond the finishing l...
Bump this thread back to the top because of how insane this is. If 50% of random second tier track runners in India are doping, then we can only guess how many of the top world guys are finding ways to dope.

This story is insane but this part makes me have one question: do you really need to dope up right before competition? I thought one of the reasons doping was tough to track down was that most athletes dope up before the competition phase of their training and allow themselves have crazy training and then cycle off for competition. Is this only done when you know you're going to have in competition testing? I didn't think people injected EPO like it's an energy gel before a race!
Thirteen male track and field athletes from the United States voluntarily flew home from the Pan American Games today, only hours before the start of competition in their sport. Their departure came as four more weight lifters were disqualified by the Pan American Sports Organization for the use of banned drugs, an action that brought the total to 11 in the last two days.

I understand the athletes avoiding the competition and testing because they know they're "glowing" and the drugs would still be in their system. What I don't understand, is the used needles and packets of EPO in the stadium bathroom. Maybe I'm just naive on the effects of EPO and other PEDs but are they really so fast acting and effective that these athletes would use them at the competition location? Like I thought the whole point was that you have a cycle while you're training to get crazy fit and then you cycle off for competition, even in stuff like bodybuilding where it's a steroid free-for-all.
Does this shocking prevalence (well, shocking for those who haven't seen stories like this about India previously) show that, since none of these athletes are world elite, doping doesn't work or that it can't account for world elite performances because its effects aren't that great? It shows that you have to already be pretty close to world elite status (e.g. Ben Johnson running 10.2s and 10.3s) to get you to the top.
I was at a low-key bike race around the time Lance was going down for doping and the rumor went around that USADA was there. Everybody pulled out their phones and the parking lot cleared out real fast.
Maybe 125 should have been there. We wound up with about 45 in the race. The men's masters categories were nearly vacant.

If lower level athletes are doping like there's no tomorrow - however ineptly - they are doing what the elite are doing in the sport, and getting away with it.
How can India continue to receive invites to international competitions following something like this. They should be banned from the olympics, world championships, asian games, etc.
If this is real, this is the state of the bathrooms. They are incredibly open about it but also maybe clueless? Is it helpful to literally dope right before a race?
