No horse in this race but does anyone else notice that there seems to often be runners from this school that stagger across the line at every major race? Just a coincidence maybe?
That was mostly Grace Hutchinson, who recently graduated. She staggered across the finish line a number of times, but most of the other Buchanan girls have been OK.
After reading this thread I went and watched the state finish line video from 2022. Clearly that team was spent from their season. The number 4 runner almost came to a full stop before the line and flung herself over it and her knee was heavily taped as if it was injured and she raced through it. The number 5 runner ran more than a minute slower than her PR. And the 7th runner walked in slowly with her hands on her hips. Her knee was taped so she was injured before the race and raced with the injury. So yes these girls are racing through things and staggering over the line.
My daughter raced this team at Woodbridge and at the finish line there were two moms with the buchanan girls loudly complaining and blaming the coaches for how they placed in that meet. I heard them telling the girls that the HIIT workouts were killing them, they were doing way too much at practice, they don’t get enough rest and that the coaches don’t know how to have a racing strategy. One of the moms said they should go to the Colorado team that won because they were tired of the coaches not knowing how to coach. They were very angry and blaming the coaches-so I don’t think it’s all sunshine at Buchanan.

Beyond the overtraining it sounds like they are dealing with a very toxic environment as well. Sad to see that happening very such a high level program.
Running Mag did a story about the over training win at all costs by HS programs a year or so ago. The story showed how many of the kids did last more then two years in College. As to the comment about not going to a running school. Very Very Very few kids truly choose a college based on the running program. Most choose the school based on the cost, education, location and ability to get in. This is not Football or Basketball, where being in a D1 big Conf makes a difference when it comes to turning pro. Kids want to run well in College to not be embarrassed but not for their future running career. BIg difference. Doesn't mean that HS Coaches are not overtraining for their own benefit and to hell with the kids.
To say they aren’t overtraining because the mileage is moderate only tells half the story. This team starts mandatory practice for XC in early June. Don’t come to summer training at 6am all summer and you don’t go to camp or Woodbridge. After XC they do a mile race on the track in December. That’s 6 straight months. Then 2 weeks off and same thing for the early February through June track season. Not to mention track PE class with the coach every school day. It’s this type of schedule, combined with intense coaching and expectations that lead to kids burning out. As long as CIF allows member schools to do this, they deserve some of the blame as well.
have been informed by several coaches that they annually make the decision not to recruit students from Buchanan High School due to concerns about excessive training methods employed by the school's coaching staff. Additionally, they often deal with anxiety at the 4-year level due to the toxic environment at their previous school.
Can anyone confirm or deny? When was the last time they sent someone to a "running school" and not BYU or Northridge?
Schools like Great Oak or Dana Hills regularly send stanford, oregon, colorado
Do these coaches have the kids doing PAAVO or something?

Somehow people think it’s the high school coach’s job to get their past athletes to run well in college.
It's not the HS coach's job to get them to run well in college but it is the HS coach's job to leave something in the tank so they have something left in the tank so they have a shot at running well in college.
Why is it better to run 15:00 in College versus running 15:00 in HS? Reality is that those 9:20 kids at the meet grinder schools are 9:50 at a lot of schools. It isn’t the talent level to do well in college no matter how you train.

Stefania and Avery both making the thread age poorly.
They could be the outlier, however, the other girls need to mirror what these two are doing outside of practice. Being a runner goes far beyond the 2 hours you spend at practice.

Let’s see how state goes before we use this win as a celebration. They were 4th last year at state. This year they are ranked 14th. 2 of their runners who have the best PRs on the team didn't even qualify as individuals this year because they are much slower. Hopefully they can all finish the race. Fingers crossed.
