I think the obvious answer is that the 3k record is more attainable for him. I think his results across 1500/2k/2 mile this year bears that out.
This thread is purely speculative: I don’t know what his plans are but if they recently changed the schedule from 5k to 3k I think a WR attempt is a plausible explanation.
I could be wrong on this but I don’t necessarily believe the rules for qualifying for the DL final are super strict—it’s not like the World Championships or the Olympics. I can completely believe that World Athletics and meet organizers would make an exception for Jakob making an attempt on a famous 27 year old record, and I wouldn’t blame them.
How much easier do you think the mile WR is to break for Jakob than the 1500? If the mile is a little easier for him, is it the relative times of the current records or the small difference in distance, or both?
It is both. The mile record is easier for Jakob but his chances of ever getting it are not great, but they are better than his chances of getting the 1500m record, but this is somewhat negated by the fact that he will indeed have more bites at the 1500m apple.
Doesn't look to be optimal conditions for any record, but the 3k is at least affected less than the 5k. I guess that's the reason - if Jakob is in record shape why would he not go for the mile?

Given good conditions I would agree. But with high temps, sun and running in the middle of the day, that 3k WR seems a lot more difficult than the mile, even for Jakob.
Jakob didn’t qualify for the 3k/5k and there’s nothing in the rules about wild cards or byes for world champions. An exception could probably be made for someone of his caliber, but I can’t imagine this is the right venue for a 3k WR attempt anyway.
Interesting theory though since the 5k being changed to 3k doesn’t make a lot of sense.

3000m is his ideal distance. Has a real shot at the WR.
It would not surprise me. After setting the 2000 WR, he teased on Instagram "onto the next one"..that could mean a lot of things, but 3000 seems like a perfect distance for him right now.
Exactly. Take another WR down. 3000m is right in his sweet spot. Come back next year and go for the Mile.
Ingebrigtsen will run the mile. No way he’s chasing the WR in 90 degree heat with jet lag in an event he isn’t qualified to run (no Diamond League points).

Jakob can do whatever he wants. The 2 mile WR at the Paris DL seems like it would be enough to “qualify” him. Could you imagine them telling him and the world, “sorry, you didn’t qualify for the 3000 DL Final.” That would only further confirm that WA and the DL are out to lunch.
I guess if anyone deserved a wildcard entry it would be Jakob, but it would be kind of cheap to let him win the Diamond League title without running a single regular season race.

I’m not sure of the exact rules, but it seems like for DL finals qualifying purposes a mile = 1500 and 2 mile = 3000 m. Will all of the guys in the Bowerman mile have run a DL mile this year, or are they qualifying based on 1500 results???

The Two Mile was not a DL event in Paris. But I don't really care, 5,000 World Champ should get you in the DL final for that event (3,000/5,000)

There were 6 qualifying races for the 3k/5k event group (one 3K and 5 5Ks), Jakob's 2-mile wasn't one of them.
The 1500/mile event group had 7 including the 2000m in Brussels. Full standings here:

The 2 mile was run during the Paris DL and when you open the results for the Paris DL, sure enough, there is Jakob listed as the winner in WR time. If the DL then wants to “enforce” that this 2 mile was NOT a sanctioned DL race, so Jakob can’t run the 3000 final, the same Jakob who is the 5000 world champion this year, the absurdity of this would be next level.
Interestingly the biggest impact might be the wild card up for grabs in the event group Jakob doesn’t do for Tokyo 25. Potential for 4 Ethiopian entrants in the 5,000 or 4 American/Kenyan/Spanish runners in the 1500.

Does 2023 DL winner = wildcard for 2025? Usually it's only the prior year's DL champion i.e. 2024.

Oh good point. That’s a brain fart out of me. I’d like them to get rid of the byes for athletes in general and instead give them to countries.
Wouldn’t he have to be a wild card then? But it is interesting as we heard the Ethiopians were scheming to run in the 12:30s. Pulling off a sub-7:25 might be easier. Should be fun one with or without Jakob.
They'll still run 12:30s if it's a 3000 including Jakob
Would be hillarious if someone sneaked up on Ingy and took the WR in front of his nose.
Someone is going to sneak up and run a 7:19? LOL. Only one guy, this year, is remotely possible of that and it's Jakob.
Girma broke Komen's indoor 3000m WR this year with 7:23.
It's also not uncommon in athletics for a record attempt by a favourite to be spoiled by an unlikely athlete who hangs on, drafting and then takes the advantage in the closing stages.
That said, Jakob's 2 mile shows he can run 7:19 already. Maybe even 7:18 high.

I'd go a bit further than wouldn't blame them. I'd be mad if Jakob tried to get into the 3k and WA said no because he hadn't qualified. I'm not in favor of world champs getting byes into the final, but that's just because I want top athletes to race the DL. Jakob has raced the DL a ton this season and set 2 WRs, so I think if he really wants to go big at the end of the season, WA should do everything they can to accommodate it.
I really hope they changed it because Jakob wants to do the double and go for both WRs, but I think it's more likely that they changed it because it cuts 5 minutes off the broadcast/was hot.

Correct.
3k is scheduled for Sunday 1:17 PST. Not optimal for WR attempt as it will be in the 80’s F full sun.
Will still be a great race and fast but no way conducive conditions for WR attempt.
