The lead vehicle which I was on led the correct way. Futsum had made a hard move which dropped Clayton. Clayton who was 15 yards back screamed to the 4 guys in front of him “wrong way guys we go left”. The leaders turned around to come back. Andrew Colley who had just fallen of said “no, we were going the right way. Follow the lead vehicle”. So the leaders turned around again and came back the right way. This brought the top 7 back together.
Futsum was cheated the most. Clayton benefitted the most.
The leaders are idiots for listening to him. That's the story here.
Athletes can be disqualified from USATF events for unsportsmanlike conduct. If Young deliberately mislead the leaders, then that is unsportsmanlike conduct and he should be disqualified

Clayton Young should be DQ’d or at the very least Futsum should beat his azz.
Futsum lost by 21 seconds. It wasn't even close. You might have an argument if it was a close race or if there was any suspicion it was intentional or malicious. Either way it's on him to know the course. He
Why would anyone tell others to stop (going the right way) and send them a different direction unless they were absolutely positive they were right? Clayton is big db.
Sounds like either a lot of sour grapes or people that simply don’t know what they’re talking about. Not one of the athletes involved complained about it.

How do you know none of the athletes have complained?

Because as the referee I asked them to voice any protest complaints or problems to me and not one athlete did. I did however, have 15-20 tell me the event was “perfect.”

How did Clay benefit? He ran off the course, and then had to catch up.
I ran this race about three times around 2010. A well organized race. I'm not sure why some are trashing the entire race for something a runner did.
Regarding the barrels, that part of the park road is closed to traffic for walkers, etc. to use. And finally, I read the results, did not see any runner with wrong bib. Can the post who made this allegation be specific about who had the wrong bib?

why are we supposed to believe that you're the referee?

99% it was an honest mistake by Young. He says so and the other runners have not said otherwise.

a "mistake" that cost the other runners the race and made Young the champion

It's evident in the video, which is available to USATF members, that it was pretty much a wash without any effect on the outcome, except to slow what would have otherwise been a near record time. Mantz and Young were hundreds of yards ahead and according to the video, Mantz was the winner. Were the results changed later?
It’s crappy that a guy told people the wrong direction and then ended up winning.
If you lost by 21 seconds, this did not cost you the race.
Vanderlei de Lima was leading the Athens marathon when he was disrupted by a fan. He ended up behind the champion by over one minute. Fan's fault? Absolutely. How is this any different

Because he wasn’t physically assaulted and de Lima was going to lose that race too.

Because he thought he was right.
so mistakes never have an outcome on race results? tell that to the Tour de France cyclists who were "mistakenly" taken down by fans posters/flags
