Also Lamecha Girma making his 5,000 debut. Krop, Gebrhiwet, Barega, Grijalva coming back from World's to race as well.
I swear if the Ethiopians run 12:40 here again after that 5K final Im gonna lose my mind
It was like 80+ degrees for the 5000, wasn't it? That 13:11 was probably more like 12:55 effort. According to the Runworks calculator (which isn't perfect) it's worth 12:48. I think it overestimates both altitude and heat affect but man, running a 5000 in the heat is brutal. Still no excuse for not going harder to try to run it out of his legs, but anyone who has raced that hot knows how miserable it is to push into all-out territory.
Sorry but high 12:5xs is gonna do nothing to Jakob. Not to mention, the only reason it was even remotely fast is because they blitzed a 3:54 last 1,600. They were on 13:40 pace through 3K, that is dawdling.
If you want to have a shot against the 1,500 studs, the last 1,600 cannot be anywhere near that fast. It needs to hurt much earlier, with slower finishing laps as the pace takes a toll. And Jakob looked less than 100%, this was their chance to hammer it from a long way out and test him, especially considering 2 out of the 3 came in totally fresh
The big "what if" of this year's men's 5000 is what would have happened with Kiplimo in the field. He likes to hammer it from way out and that could have been enough to break Jakob in his current state of health

I agree that the Ugandan's are the wild card. Cheptegei has done a lot of work in the past to keep global finals fast in the 10,000 (26:49 in 2017 and 26:48 in 2019), but less so at 5,000. Uganda is also much more keen on having sacrificial lambs than Kenya/Ethiopia, and we have seen a Ugandan take out the pace in the last 3 global 10K finals (Nobody went with him though).
But again, Im not gonna believe it until I see it. And with Cheptegei making a marathon debut soon, his time chasing 5,000s might be closing.
Hmmm. Lot of the 1500 guy are likely just going to cruise it in after a tough WCs and long season. May be lining up perfectly for a first DL win for Hocker, who has almost no season prior to the WCs and likely still working on improving fitness. Could be a 3:31 low win.
That didn't age well. Hocker DFL on a not particularly fast DL race, in 3:32.

I guess anything is possible, but I'd probably make him 8th to 10th favourite for this race. Nuguse, Nordas, Katir, Kipsang, all have something to prove, even guys like Habz and Laros will fancy this.
Even a 3:31 race is enough to draw the sting from Hocker's kick, which only seems effective in races around 3:35
See: no Jakob, no sub-3:30. Hocker 9th, which is about his position

The second pacemaker couldn’t even make it to 800. Pure happenstance that killed the prospect of a fast time. Sure Jakob helps in delivering a fast time, but this was not up to the pacing we typically see.
I noted that Hocker was pretty well positioned near the end of the third lap. But from the bell onwards Hocker only went backwards in the pack. And that was in a 3:30 race. This result wasn't down to bad tactics, but rather just not having the speed over the distance.
It's time for Hocker to quit playing around with his NewGen TC gang and cut bait. He needs to get into a professional program, otherwise we're going to keep seeing these 8-10th places. He should be running better. He's been healthy since early April, hence five months of solid training under his belt. That's no longer an excuse.

Should stay where he’s happy.
Also note that 50% of you fickle f@rts wanted Teare to move back to NG TC after his lackluster year.

I have no issue with the man being happy. But it seems that he may not be optimizing his talents in his current situation. In previous races I cut him some slack for still not having world class tactics. But today he was well positioned for a man with his reputed kick, and he had nothing.

Hocker, Tanner and Romo have found their level. Good but not good enough. Ramsden should never be let near a DL race again.
