Josh Kerr - Dumb Comments About Ingebrigtsen?

The first public news I heard about Jakob’s illness was soon AFTER the 1500m final, when Rob Walker (closing out the WA broadcast) stated Jakob may not run the 5000m the following day due to a cold.

I mean, we allow jumpers to hype up the crowd and they don't come across as insecure... almost like it helps them, even if out of rhythm.

I thought Kerr was pretty enlightening in that interview. He talked about how he had done similar things to Jakob and how it came from a place of insecurity. It's noticeable how he has grown. Even last year he was giving it all the big talk about winning Worlds, smashing records, etc. This year, he's been confident but circumspect. I like this version of Kerr a lot. He's on the right side of the confidence-arrogance spectrum. No talk of 3:27, just how can he win. And most of all, he delivered.

Psychologically, Kerr thinking Jakob was showing weakness is a smart thing for him to buy into. Even if it wasn’t true. Getting upset about it is odd. That’s like getting mad at MJ for making up supposed slights from his opponents. Part of the game, look for any psychological edge to build up your belief and motivation.

I don’t care what he has to believe to motivate himself, clearly it worked so good for him. But internalizing it as true enough to recite in an interview is a bit strange.

Other sports do have plenty of trash talk I guess, but usually it’s based on events of a game/season, not just completely making something up about another person

I'll note this - rewatch the finish of the semis. Kerr comes off the turn perfectly positioned in the lead, easily maintaining it down most of the stretch while Jakob launches his showboating finish. Watch Kerr's reaction as he watches Jakob overtake - he breaks out into a big smile. My take: he knew he had way more in the tank and could take Jakob down in the finals if that's all Jakob had. He was right.

Kerr provided his opinion/conjecture on JI's motives just as you are providing your opinion on his motives. The showboating in a semi is a bad look for JI (esp. when you lose the final) and it does speak to some form of emotional need/insecurity in him, IMO. Apparently, in Josh's too.

Rivalry at its best. The ego is difficult to deal with when both are at elite levels. I think Kerr speaks some truth here. We were all taken a back by the waving to the crowd at the semi by Jakob. Jakob did appear tense at the final, and tensed up when Kerr challenged him. Jakob is a great runner, but it seems like this announced self esteem that he is the best ever is premature, and only hurts himself. The issue with his father, and his proclaimed drive to be the best runner ever only gives competitors like Kerr more motivation. Either way, it is great for track and field, the greatest sport ever. All the rest are games. Both athletes are striving to be the best.

Yeah he was totally thinking the 3:27 olympic champion gave all he had in the semis as he casually passed the entire field, because that makes even a little sense

Is everyone else to ever do anything similar an insecure showboater? Never seen anyone else get nearly the amount of push back that jakob is getting

From pre race tv coverage you could see Jakob was visibly nervous, agitated, and anxious, which is very surprising given that he was meant to destroy the field and win gold.

Josh clearly understood this about Jakob in the semi and did what he needed to do in final, his comments were on point.

I think with Ingebrigtsen there’s an element of not just wanting to win but to dominate, both the race and everything that is said around if. The only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about etc.

The stuff in the semi was very ill judged in my eyes. Fair enough, be the best but don’t be a dick about it.

Kerr at the end to me was just a natural reaction, for better or worse that’s who he is.

Jakob had a choice and chose to be a dick. I’m happy he was beaten.

Pretty sure OP is the same guy who is obsessed with Kerr as he went into the same "3:27" rant that the other registered account does every single time. We get it. You don't like Kerr. But the 'performing' of overt displays of confidence being linked with insecurity is a completely normal take. Countless UFC fighters display this behaviour all the time, and it's fairly easy to see through. If you didn't think showboating in the semis was at least a mindgame from Jakob, then I don't know what to say. And if you agree it was a mindgame, does someone who is 100% confident need to play a mindgame on their rivals? Regarding Kerr- please get a new hobby/obsession.

I think Kerr meant the crowd was dead during the semi, so Jakob tried to get them excited.

That’s how I interpreted it as well. Like a boxer who keeps having punches landed on him…he will smile and shake his head as if they have no impact, only to get knocked out a couple of rounds later. Kerr knew that Jakob was being pressed in the semis, and that he was putting on a mask to hide it.

As far as I’m concerned Josh Kerr can say what he wants about anyone he wants to say it about in the 1500 because he is the world champ.

The only thing the rest of the field can do is go home and start getting ready for Paris.

And then we will also see if he has gained enough security to run without shades.
