I think it's insane to expect a world record. But I do think there is a world where Kipsang goes out in 55.0, Jakob takes over on the back straight and runs 54 for the next two laps to break the field...he's shown the fitness. It might be a pipe dream but I would love to see a Rudisha-style attempt and it would be the only thing he could do right now to cement himself as the GOAT before moving up to the 5k.

No chance of a world record. J Ingebrigtsen will be willing to split 800m as fast as 1:52.0 without pace lights and rabbits. There is no one racing 1500m final willing to help J I with pacing. J Ingebrigtsen is not running 1:52.0 followed by 93.99 final 700m. That stated, I am sure J Ingebrigtsen knows 1500m history. John Walker was almost 3 seconds superior to all his 1500m competitors, 1976 Olympics 1500m final. Walker won by 1/2 a step. Noureddine Morceli, 1992 Summer Olympics, 1500m final, allowed a slow pace through 800m. N Morceli was at least 2 seconds superior to his competitors. Morceli wasn't even a factor in a slow race. J Ingebrigtsen is almost 2 seconds superior to his competitors. In a race 3:30 or slower, J Ingebrigtsen could lose. I cannot see him risking losing.
Kipsang could very easily run the first 800m faster than 1:52 and will be the most likely person to push from the gun
The only way a world record happens is if someone else decides to go fast from the outset and Jakob runs behind them and then lays on the gas the final 700M. However, under that scenario the initial front runner would likely fade in the final 400 so barring someone else running a PR, there's little incentive for Jakob to hammer all the way to the finish and risk fading himself.
The Olympics and World Championships are great for WRs in the shorter track events and all the field events but above the 800 world records are highly unlikely. Even the fast 5000M times earlier in the year won't lead to a winning time close to a WR, no one has run within 5 seconds of it this year and WC record for the 5000 is 15 seconds off the world record as participants are focused on winning gold not times.
Idiot.
