Every time I see this list I get PO’d seeing Houlihan at the top. Amazing to me that someone can be serving a ban for doping and still have a performance from the year before considered legal!
Also puts into perspective how slow Simpson and Uceny’s PRs were, considering how good they were. I mean 2011-2017 Simpson was probably the second-best 1500 runner in the world and she only ran 3:57? 10k runner Cranny is at 3:58 enroute to a mile. Pretty weird.
To get an idea how great of a racer Jenny Simpson was, here is a list of runners she has beaten in CHAMPIONSHIPS (WC or Olympics):
Faith Kipyegon Sifan Hassan (2X) Laura Muir (2X) Genzebe Dibaba (2X) Caster Semenya Helen Obiri (2X – once was a fall) Maryam Jamal Nancy Langat
She may have gotten a little lucky with the heat assignments, but McGee did what it took to get through to the final & that’s pretty impressive regardless.
She is always hanging around. I don't think she has any chance here but she has absolutely made the most of herself. As did Brenda, and a lot of other US ladies. They're drawing dead at some point in every major championship, but they are there, on the start line.

Not to mention she also won 2014 DL championship in Zurich, the de facto world championship that year. Over Hassan, Obiri, Aregawi, Kibiwot, Rowbury.
5x DL winner, including DL champion. Ranked #1 in the world in 2014. World champion. Four-time global medalist. Three-time Olympian.
Kipyegon, Dibaba, Hassan, Holmes probably the only three potentially clean women all-time that were clearly better than her. Many obvious Chinese and Soviet dopers clouding up the all-time lists. Taking them out, Simpson is probably in the next tier with Muir, Tsegay, Aregawi. Decker if you believe she was clean (I do not).

If Hiltz was 3:59.6 and Cranny was 3:58.9 in the 4:16 race, how was Cory 3:58 in during the 4:18? If she was running even it would’ve been 4:00.4. So MAYBE she was 3:59.high and faded, but she wasn’t def 3:58.
I do get that you’re saying she could’ve broken 4 if it was a 15, but her en route split was probably 4:00.X, as she always seems to pull
that's such a funny take that I've seen a few times on here that makes no sense because she has historically been so much better in the faster heat or faster races. Has been much better than Adelle Tracy this year, has beaten Hull and Bryant and I think maybe even Muir? So I don't think it's obvious that she wouldn't have made it. Probably would've run 3:56-57 and been very close and top 5 american ever in the process. Which I think she'll do in the final!
A lot to hope for. I'm happy if she gets towed to a PR of 3:59.xx finishing 7-11.
I think Cranny would be at least 3:56 if she trained for the 1500. I wouldn’t be surprised if yesterday was her one and only world 10k. . .
Since this thread is about Cory McGee, won't hijack it to ramble on about Cranny.
However, absolutely yes to respond to sentence #1 . . . and absolutely "I hope so" in response to sentence #2.inis
Monson & Schweizer belong in the 10k as their main championship events . . . aerobic monsters but currently without great finishes . . . they are the present & future of US women's 10k racing.
Cranny belongs in the 5k & 1500. She has a more compact, muscular build better suited to the shorter events . . . very similiar to Shelby & EPSP . . . but more important, a miler's mindset . . . and, a stated preference for the shorter distances, including the 800. Great opportunity to redeem herself in the upcoming 5k.
Back to Cory . . . posted this on another thread . . . excellent tactician w/good finish who has made 3 consecutive Oly/WC finals . . . 10th last year in Eugene in 4:03, over 10 secs behind 1st . . . fully expect the same result again tomorrow . . . hope she can be dragged to a new pr and finally get under 4-flat . . . but at age 31 and having been healthy for a long time now, what she's been giving us is her best . . .
Simpson is probably in the next tier with Muir, Tsegay, Aregawi. Decker if you believe she was clean (I do not).
Aregawi was suspended for a banned substance in 2016, which coincided with the end of her career.
Despite the WC gold I consider Muir and Tsegay to be above Simpson, because 3:54 is next level. On the other hand, despite her Olympic gold I would not say Kelly Holmes was “definitely better” than Simpson at 1500. Simpson has more global medals in the event, a faster PB and over twice as many sub-4 seasons.
Back to Cory . . . excellent tactician w/good finish
McGee is many things, but she is not an "excellent tactician." In fact, she is the opposite of a tactician. She only has one race plan: McGee runs every race as if she could win.
This might work against Americans, but not against against international elites. When she runs against really fast runners, she stays near the front for most of the race and then blows up and fades to the back of the chase pack.
That is what happened at Monaco in 2021. She was 5th with a 100 metres to go, and faded to 11th. Ditto for Worlds last year.
McGee is open about her strategy. After Worlds last year, she said, "I knew when I was doing it "You're not running for 5th right now."" She didn't see the point of sitting at the back of the chase pack so she could win "this second...this other race that's happening inside the race."
Depending on your perspective, McGee's approach is either "gutty" or "delusional." Whichever, it is definitely not "tactical."

If there are odds on this race at some British bookmaker, I suspect Cory getting a medal would be at least 50-1. She has the second slowest PR of the 12 finalists and there are four women with PRs more than 5 seconds faster than hers.
Well she’s either gonna break 4 for the first time or come in DFL
I hope not but it could be an ugly race for Cory tonight. She’s not in the same league as most of the other woman in the final. Hopefully she has a big breakthrough

Two different eras, even though it wasn't that long ago. Supershoes, super tracks are worth a second or two. I think Nick Willis said 3 sec. 11 of the top 20 have been in the last couple years.
