Last year the winner of this race ran a 14:45. So he ran 3 seconds faster than last year’s winner. Shively’s team is ranked 3rd at Heartland on Dyestat. They looked like a 3-man team in this race but they were missing Tofteland (4:23 / 9:41 / 16:23) and W Ferguson (16:18 / 9:45). Looks like they are 5-deep at the most. 5 guys is all it takes to score but this race truly shows that injuries and sicknesses are a part of sports and having 6th and 7th runners is recommended too. Last year Dowling Catholic was 5-deep but their 5th ran with only 1 shoe for much of the race and didn’t have a 6th or 7th to back him up. This is why they lost to Stevens Point (this team was 7-deep)

The course is mostly grass with the finish on the track. But it is WAY short of 5km. Probably about 3 miles. 90+% of these kids won't run a lower time all year.

The team thats not mentioned in the preseason rankings for heartland are the ones to watch out for! Cedar falls from iowa.
Coming from someone who was actually there, the course was changed to an actual 5k this year because 8:50 Shively and also sub nine Andrew Hauser were excepted to run really fast and the meet directors wanted it to be a true 5k. So yes it was short however, this year it is not.
Yes, Cedar Falls lost 3 seniors, but returned their 1&2. Also added a transfer who became their 2nd runner. And their 4-7 guys are closing the gap on their third. They have only 2 seniors on varsity as well. Solid JV performance too. Should probably be a nationally ranked team now and will be competing for an NXN berth. This team has never made NXN before. What is in the water at Cedar Falls?

No. It is way short. No one is saying Shively can't run that fast. But many other kids ran times that they are not capable of. It is way short. I have been told by several coaches that were there and that did wheel it. It was barely over 3 miles.

And just checked a bunch of strava pages. So far Most are between 4.88km and 4.95km on strava. I did see one 4.98km. Knowing that the watches will always give a distance that is longer than the actual distance, it is clearly very short. 4.8x km which puts it closer to 3miles than 5km.
Just need to find one of the runners from the race that uses strava. Not hard. Everyone here in KC knows the course is short. They set the course up short on purpose so more teams will want to run there.
The course was literally changed to being longer because the reputation was that it was short. Times were fast because its flat and weather was nice, but if you were actually there and actually talked to the people who measured the course, and actually measured it yourself then you would know that it isn't short this year. The past few years it was 3.06 miles now its 3.1. It still wasn't ever even that short.
