Sheesh. Alicia sets an AR at 5000 three weeks ago and this thread is filled with haters. Given her 14:19, she's in sub-30 shape as well. Can't wait to see how she'll stack up in Budapest. A medal in either event might be a stretch against this field, but she's our best prospect and at the top of her game. Go Alicia!
The 5k field is incredibly deep this year. While she has run 14:19, I don’t see her closing in the 60 point or sub 60 necessary to medal. I’m guessing she finishes in the 6-8 range
"The morning after Monson’s easy three-miler, she upgraded to 10 miles, running half of the workout alongside OAC teammate Sage Hurta-Klecker, who is one a dozen On-sponsored athletes here in St. Moritz to train."
"It’s a necessary normal while Monson strives to maximize her budding talent and represent a country that has yet to produce a world champion in the 10,000 meters, male or female. (Only two in history have: Kara Goucher earned a silver medal in 2007 in Osaka; and Emily Infeld won bronze at the 2015 World Championships in Beijing)."
Consider that what is written here on this board is a sample of the general population. I can’t imagine that any of the people that grew up texting would even notice the examples that you highlighted. It’s sad; but it’s reality. Add to the fact that people just don’t seem to care about the quality of their work anymore, and this is what passes as acceptable publishing.

Is she a better medal threat than Elise? Elise has a 3:59/2:00 to her name.

Alicia has faster PRs at the events they are actually running, so yes

Billy Mills?
I thought the poster was just referring to the horrible grammar.

And Elise stomped her in both events at USA's.
Is it really that hard for you all to understand that a slow race favors Elise while a fast race favors Alicia? If someone else makes it a fast race at either 14:15 or 29:30-45 pace, I have much more confidence in Alicia than in Elise. Now, maybe that's very unlikely at Worlds, but we'll have to wait and see.

In the end its a race and we'll just have to see what happens. If they would all end up aranged by current PRs then they would not even need to race. Faster people having a bad day etc can lead to many many unpredictables and Alicia is definitely up there and can hang with the fast women.
You have to factor in not only that there are faster runners but that some of them will likely crash because they are trying to win gold or medal, while the American, as good as she is, is likely just to go for fifth or sixth, as her coach has just taught her to aspire only to that level, so Monson, who is in sub-30 shape, will not crash and will probably get a couple of the Ethiopians in the last lap or two.
Monson gets a big profile in Outside and Ritz is honest about her chances:
“If you look at it on paper right now, she should be fifth or sixth in either event,” Ritzenhein says, referring to Monson’s double attempt at the World Championships. “If you look at the times, the competition she’s run against, it’s hopeful. I think she can medal in the right kind of situation, but that’s not going to be the barometer for success for her right now.”
There was one major thing I didn't like about the article and I get that the article is written for a non track audience but her lack of kick is something that should have been talked. Did they mention anywhere that she didn't win a US title this year?
This quote below looks wrong given Gidey’s WR is 29:01, so the difference is over a minute.
”Still, Monson has a bit of catching up to do. Her 10K personal best—30:03.82 achieved in March when she shaved 10 seconds off the previous national record set in 2016 by Molly Huddle—currently ranks eighth in the world in 2023. It is 34 seconds behind Ethiopian world record holder Letesenbet Gidey, the 2022 world champion and Olympic bronze medalist.”
4 athletes way better- Gidey, Tsegay, Hassan, Taye
On similar level- L Hailu, 3 Kenyans, Cranny, McColgan (if fully fit)
In 5k:
6 athletes way better- Gidey Tsegay, Hassan, Taye, Kipyegon, Chebet
Likely to Outkick her - 4th Ethiopian (Hailu/Eisa), Chelimo, Rengeruk, Cranny
5th or 6th would be a monster result in the 5,000. In the 10K, she’d need her best race and hope Taye, Cranny, the Kenyans et al have some off races or run too ambitiously
8th in the world this year, 34 seconds behind the leader, not the world record, so the article is correct.
JG's new front page article analyzing the women's 10k pretty much comes to the same conclusion . . . Alicia & Elise for 6th & 7th, in some order, if both are at their best on the evening of the 19th . . .
Problem is for Monson is that I have a feeling this will be a very fast race as opposed to the traditional sit and kick. With Tsegay and Hassan in the field Gidey has to up tempo reasonably early if she is to have any chance of retaining her title. Given that both Hassan and Tsegay have run mid 29 min 10ks this summer and Gidey has dropped a 14.07 5k in her only track race this year, I very much doubt any of them will fade to allow the next tier of runners to pounce.
