Winning time was 32 min for men. Very roughly looking at the time for the other parts of the event it looks like the 1st or 2nd guy finished the 3.5mi run in 26min, so subtracting ~2:30 for the flips in the beginning say 24:30. I'm sure there were other people who ran the running section faster, or could have run much faster without all the flipping in the beginning. Somewhere around 19min doesn't seem far fetched. The announcer claims one of the competitors ran low 5's for the mile here

One of the first events at the CrossFit Games this week is a basic 5k run on a cross-country course in Madison, WI. It's hilarious reading other posts where non-runners predict these CrossFitters will run 17:30 or faster on an XC course.
I'd be shocked if any guy breaks 19:00 and any woman breaks 20:00. My guess is 19:10 wins it for guys and 20:20 wins for women. What are your predictions?
The course will be 5ks measured in barbells or something weird like someone doing 500 lunges = 1km
Also top crossfitters arent just bulky. They are usually short and bulky because that combination in lifting for time events, especially anything overhead, the shorter you are means say the barbell has less distance to travel to complete one rep. So there is an optimal height for CF and it appears to be like 5’7. 5’7 and 200lbs is a great distance running combination.
The commentators of course will fawn over the leaders, reminding you they, although heaving and visually doing a slow jog, are actually running 5min pace and are of course, the fittest people on earth.

They need to get some elite 13 year old girl to pace the field and see the fittest people all get chicked...
I currently compete in hybrid races (the term for events with running + strength combined), like Hyrox and DEKA. Within the past 6 months, I've deadlifted 385, squatted 3 x 270, benched 225, and ran a 17:10 5k. I'm nowhere near the level of CrossFit Games athletes, but I actually know a lot about this topic. More than even you, Alan.
I was asking the question to see what others think. The best hybrid racers, many of whom I train with monthly, are in 16:20-16:40 shape for 5k when it's championship season. We all weigh 175-185, which is 20-30 lbs less than most of the CrossFit Games athletes, who aren't as talented runners as hybrid racing guys like Hunter McIntyre or Rich Ryan. I'm confident that there's absolutely zero chance any CrossFit Games athlete could average sub-6:00 pace on an XC course if it's truly 5000m.

Or, let them get chicked by some 13 year old girl who barely makes the junior high JV.

Women: Some beast with "Dotir" ending their name. They only celebrate until the test results come back. Then it's back to Iceland to shave your face and back daily.
Struggling to find any info on the proposed course. The completely useless app says "Rogue North Park Stadium" which must be an area designated on the AEC grounds, where any number of bubble runs and charity 5k's have taken place, as well as the CrossFit Games "cyclocross race" a couple years ago. Maybe they'll rope the dog park into it, and really piss off the neighbors!
To get max points for Marines fitness testing you need to run 18 mins for 3 miles, pretty tough for most people. Avg Crossfitter at the CF Games weighs around 200 pounds. If this is a hilly course they will struggle mightily, might not see anyone sub 19. I predict a winning time of 17:15 on a relatively flat road like XC course, times will be much slower if run over hills/long grass. These dudes are simply too heavy
These crossfitters would get stomped on average by decathles in a 1500m run. The crossfitters are poor distance runners. They are more like gym rats who try to lift heavy and happen to do cardio but suck at it. Crossfit is primarily focused on heavy lifting. Being a good distance runner has zero relevance towards crossfit until now. But I'm sure anyone breaking 18min for 5k would be left behind in all the other events (which require heavy lifting).
Just looking at the physique of the CF women tells you that it was too strength-based to be called the "fittest people on earth". Endurance is 1/3 of the fitness triangle.

CrossFit 5k xc winner ended up with 17:46 for the win. How did your deadlift or overhead squat come out?
1/10 Hasn't happened yet.
I used to run with a guy who was a div I 800m runner and put on about 40 lbs of muscle after graduating college by becoming a bit of a gym rat. He was also a very dedicated runner and was able to get his 5k under 18 min. But he was running 50 mpw with two track workouts and a pretty aggressive long run with a bunch of twiggy fast guys on the weekend.
So, it is definitely possible for a 190-200 lb guy to run a sub 18 5k. But no way someone who just does cross fit is going to get anywhere close to that. Crossfitters put too much muscle on their butt and legs and are also very top heavy due to the emphasis on fast reps of deadlifts, etc.
The age groupers are already competing at CrossFit Games -- the pros haven't started yet. The men's 30-39 results are: Adam De Jong — 17:36.03 Julien Lopez — 17:49.19 Josh Marunde — 17:55.74 Pretty solid considering these guys are for real strong too.
